Using Normal or Displacement maps to generate a mesh?

Basically what I want to do is use displacement or normal maps to generate terrain(topology) on a imported UV’d surface(sphere).
Can I bake the maps into the displaced mesh for further sculpting?

Second question Is it possible to planar projection map displacement maps based on the object boundary as well?

Click the Apply DispMap button in the displacement map palette, that will apply the map to the mesh. Alternatively, the map can be applied as an Alpha.
