Using Array Mesh for border construction

TLDR - How you go about making instanced geometry for the border of an object like a table (image below, but with the end of the pattern misbehaving)?

I’m making a decorative border for an object I am making (image below). I started with a single leaf, then went to using array mesh. Stage one, I mirrored it over, rotated, and offset it. Stage two, I offset it and mirrored the previous result. So far so good. I had the base link in my chain. Stage 3, I offset and repeated it one pattern short of the edge, I created a new stage, selected ‘chain’, added a second repeat, and rotated it. Good so far, I’ve made it across the top and the edge. But stage 5 became a problem. Clicking ‘chain’ I found it continued to rotate the next leaf set, which I can’t figure out how to rotate.

The question finally is then, am I misusing this tool? How would you go about making a border? (I’d prefer to retain the ability to change/modify the leaf later, therefor instance geometry of some type is preferred)
