Upgrading Zbrush?

Hi,

I’m going to buy Zbrush soon and I was wondering if I buy now (4R6) then would I have to pay for 5 when it comes out? or is the upgrade free?

Thanks

Matt

There’s been no announcement about ZBrush 5, not even a vague indication as to when it might be, so you should make your buying decision on what’s available now.

It’s just that today I saw the post of " Pixologic is proud to announce ZBrush 4R7, our final release in the ZBrush 4 series" Meaning 5 will be after R7, which I guess would still be at least a year before the next major update…

How about the previous Zbrush, did people with Zbrush 3 get 4 for free?

Thanks

If you buy Zbrush r6 right now, you will receive the upgrade to r7 for free. That is the ONLY thing you should base a decision on. Assume that Zb5 will be a paid upgrade.

What has happened in the past is not necessarily a reliable indicator of what will happen in the future.

It’s been a free ride for a long time (I must be around my 10th upgrade over 5 years, and I’ve never had to pay a single cent extra for it despite the increasing price of the program over that period). I’m sure Pixologic will have to charge us all something for a major upgrade in the future, and v5 may or may not be the time to do so. But even if V5 does happen to be a paid upgrade, I think it would be a fair value and a good investment based on their track record (especially when compared to other companies). And if for whatever reason you don’t upgrade, you’ll still have purchased V4 (and look at the amazing stuff you can do with that!)

As Spyndel posted, buy 4R6 now and the upgrade to 4R7 will be free. That’s set in stone, and no news about whether upgrade to ZB5 will be free or paid.

Lets go on assuming that R5 will be like the other upgrades. No need to jump the gun on the cash register um kay?

Thank you.

It would be irresponsible to give that advice. Aurick stated in the R7 anticipation thread that they will charge for an upgrade at some point, they just don’t know when, or aren’t willing to say.

Therefore, the most sensible thing to do when making a purchasing decision is to assume that every update after R7, which has been announced to be free for registered users, will be a paid upgrade. Then one can be pleasantly surprised if otherwise, but prepared for this possibility.

If a purchase decision is involved, take nothing for granted.
