Unwanted planes created when using clip-curve

gator-base.pnggator-plane.pnggator-plane2.png

I used the clip curve to remove the base on a photogrammetry scanned Alligator I made. As you can see from the second image that the cut plane left a residual mesh plane along the cutting plane only where there used to be a solid. The 3rd images shows what happens when I try using the clip-curve to remove part of the plane … another plane!

How can I avoid this and if I cannot then how do I easily remove the residual plane?

I have looked at dozens of tutes and links when searching and none of them answer my questions.

Thanks,

I just realized that the artifacts produced are not just planes but surfaces. If I used a clip curve that was a line segment then the artifact will be a plane and if the clip curve is a curve it will be a curved surface artifact. See:

Hey 3DAlliance, you could try the TrimCurve instead, you won’t get weird extruded planes, as it cuts the mesh and replaces it with a new polygroup on that section. Though it doesn’t work very well on single sided planes. The SliceCurve is better for that, turn on PolyFrame, slice it up, and delete the hidden areas.

If you just want to remove the base from your croc, you could precisely mask the croc and use the Extract option under Subtool.
Turn Smooth(Smt) and Thickness to 0. Leave Double off, and hit Extract.

Cheers ~

I appreciate the help;)

Bangers is correct, although the trim brushes dont work in all situations. It’s important to remember the clip brushes are actually a “flatten” brush, so you need to approach their operation with an angle that wont leave any overhanging geometry. Sometimes you can get what you’re after with 2 successive clips…one to flatten to the plane you want, and another the flatten the overhang inward.
