Unable to edit my sculpt

Hello, sorry noobie question. I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong so if anyone could point me in the right direction I will be eternally gratefull

This has happen on several different sculpts- I am in edit mode and have been happily sculpting away- then sub divide quite a few times-I go to see how my sculpt looks with different material- then I go to sculpt again and find that I can only rotate the model-my brush won’t let me do anything to it. I never changed from edit . Hmmmmm

Hoping one of you can stop my madness

Thanks in advance

Hi! Could it be that you have unchecked the “Z-add” or Z-sub" button for the brush you are using? That way nothing will happen when you try to sculpt. Just a guess

// tennet

Hi Tennet, thanks for replying- No I have the Zadd and/or Zsub active- I am not sure what I have pressed to make it do this.
The brush feels like a magnet just rotating the sculpt around but not able to actually sculpt on it-

I am in edit mode-Zadd/sub active- I just can’t think what I have done

I have done this a couple of times and had to start a whole new sculpt-which I obviously would like to avoid because I dont want to keep making this mistake

I have had a scour thru the forums but couldn’t find anyone with my quirky problem

Have you tried going out of edit mode, Ctrl+N to clear the document and re-drawing your tool back on the canvas, then go into edit mode again.

Hi Richard- yes I have tried that  and no joy- I tried to go thru all the most logical steps but I just can’t figure out what I have done.

Thank you for replying

Are you using a Tablet? Maybe your Tablet drivers are causing the problem. Also, try disabling Right Click Navigation in Preferences > Interface.

Hi Zber2-Yes I am using a wacom tablet- I shall try your suggestion

Thanks for replying

Hi Zber2, I just tried your suggestion but still unable to do anything to my model

Thanks for replying

Hello

I have exactly the same problem with the same parameter, I use a Wacom tablet too but with my mouse is a same.
If someone have a solution, a idea
Thanks

Have you double checked that you don’t have an active mask that is hidden? Try and clear any active mask that you might have (->tools->mask->clear) and see if that helps.

// tennet

Hi Tennent, Yes I tried clearing any masks but still no joy

Have you tried an init zbrush, then loading your tool again?
Your focal shift is at zero?

Hi Letus, I just tried your suggestion and no joy, still unable to edit the model.

Thanks for replying I appreciate everyones help

Would it be possible for you to share a model that isn’t working? Maybe you should try and re-install Zbrush? I got that advice from Tech Support once when Zbrush behaved strange

 Hi tennet, thanks for replying-He is a bust and has a subtool teeth-which were appended from the ring-which was my first attempt at teeth-didn’t work out very well  . I wonder if the teeth are the problem-I might go and delete them and append some new ones.

He wasn’t an important model,so it isn’t critical-I was just curious as to what I may have done-trying to avoid this in the future.

Maybe a tad late, but may help in the future. (Unless you’ve already worked this out.) The problem may be that you have the subtool (teeth) selected instead of the tool you’re trying to sculpt on. Select your main mesh in the subtool palette and see if that works. That would explain the tool rotating when attempting to paint, because you’re outside of the teeth’s proximity
which is one way that rotate works (unless of course you use the navigation rotate button)

Hi Lumin8,
Thanks for the reply, never too late for advice. I think I will have to re visit that model at some point and try it out. Thanks again for replying.

I know it’s too late, but maybe it will be ueseful in the future: sometimes i cant to edit my subtool, because it all in mask  it was happened after GOZ from 3Ds max
and i cant do anything and I all in stress  ! my subtool is all dark and not editable
 yeah it’s really newbiesh

Hey lutcus,

Its never too late to hear advice and experiences. Thanks for taking the time to reply, I appreciate it very much.

It was really strange-I did check to see if I had masked it but no- nevermind. It hasn’t happened again on my newer models-probably because I am tackling topology at the mo

If I do figure out what I did, I will post it here.lol

Thanks again for the reply

Hi, I would like to pick this thread up because it deals with the same problem that I have right now.

First thing that confuses me is the fact that there are many possibilities to save a file. I saved my file as a document, a .zbr. Shortcut ctrl+s saves as .zpr. The problem is that the saved document doesn’t seem to contain the tool/model that I have created before. It’s there, but I can’t pick it up or go into edit mode.
What would’ve been the correct way to save a file?

Thank you very much!
