Turning ZBrush models into a virtual hologram

I’ve been lurking on ZBC for well over a year and I finally decided to signup and join the community. I’m a hobbyist/novice modeller and whenever I try to explain ZBrush or 3D modeling to people they struggle to understand it. I usually have a few screen grabs of models on my phone, but they never really show how cool models can look. To that end, I decided to write an app so I could carry my models on my phone… and more than just a 3D viewer I wanted it to be a virtual hologram to show off my Zbrush work.

Take a look and let me know what you think:

I’m about 2 weeks out from submitting it to the AppStore and I’m finishing up some other models that will go in as part of the app. I have room for about 3 more models to be included. If you’re interested and would like to have your model part of the application, please contact me. I’d love to showcase some of the amazing talent at ZBC (and provide all due credit of course to you for your model). Please let me know!

Update: Just a clarification on how this is being done, this is all running in realtime using the phone GPU and XNA. The models are being lit with 3 vertex lights using the BasicEffect shader object. I’ve been able to maintain my target of 30 FPS with models up to about 20k polygons. This also allows me to create other more interactive scenarios, I haven’t announced yet.

I embedded the video in your post. (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?t=85640)

This is some very cool stuff. I assume it’s using the phone’s accelerometer to know the screen’s orientation and is then switching between pre-rendered frames?

Are you planning to release versions for iOS and Android? (I’d love to see this on my Xoom!)

Are you planning to create a utility of some kind that will allow ZBrush users to load their own creations into the app?

I want it on my iphone !!!

Awesome !!

Wow, this is simply amazing. Technology is soooo cool! :+1: :+1: :+1:

Some kind of headtracking for my phone. Im glad u stopped lurking. Cool stuff i would like to know more that.

very neat man!!!
IOS pls,
kthx bye =)

amazing if I had a phone that supported it I would be all over this, and forget ios, release this on android ;p

I think that is one of the coolest things I have seen in a while. It would be great to have something like this for the ipad. Really neat!

Hi Brian, looking good so keep it up buddy!!! It was fun meeting you at 3dta, hope to see some updates on this soon.

Hey everyone, thanks for the comments! I have some new stuff to show off in the video below. I’ve improved the rendering performance and perspective at the more extreme angles. I’ve also added a turntable mode  - so you now have interactive floating turntable holograms. Please PM me if you’d like to contribute a model to the first release - which is on track for release sometime next week!

Everyone, I’m pleased to announce that my ZBrush model 3D hologram app has been officially released to the Windows Phone app store! After lots of fighting with matrix math for perspective distortion, I’m ultimately happy with how the final effect turned out. Now that all the coding is done, I can get back to working on ZBrush modeling and add some more models to the application. If you like what you see here and would be interested in contributing a model, please contact me or send mail to [email protected].

Goodness Brian, this is truely out of this world. You really need to make it for Droid and Iphone (and someone already suggested Ipad). That game with the ball… tooooo cooool! What are you, Einsteins great grandson or something?

very cool!! make an android version! please:D

That’s awesome!!! Any plans for releasing it on the iPhone?

Whoaa! This is really cool!

Brilliant stuff!! I may actually buy a windows phone Just for this app!

GREAT WORK, I want this. I can see that you must be some kind of genius lol. Im sure im not the only one thinking how the next thing would be the ability to get our own models into the program. For now tho that is truly amazin. thank you

Are you expecting to have a version for the Droid and iPhone soon?

Hey guys, I’m back with a new update that includes lots of awesome new 3D stuff. Aside from some new content, I spent a lot of time on something near and dear to all our hearts… getting lighting and shadows working for more realistic holograms. Almost all the models are done in ZBrush (even the low poly stuff) with a few supplemental models from TurboSquid. Now that I’m done with the changes to support the lighting I want, I can get back to modelling stuff in R2! Check out the video below to see what I mean.

Sorry guys, it’s still for Windows Phone only - but I have generally cool news about the app. The first release of HoloPhone3D was certified as a ‘HotApp’ by Channel9 and reached the #1 spot for paid Entertainment apps in 13 countries (including #1 in the US for over 5 weeks). Update v1.5 takes it to a completely new level. HoloPhone3D v1.5 is a massive update that delivers 23 holograms content including 11 mini-game levels - all inside of a fully redesigned rendering engine optimized to deliver some of the best visuals you’ll see on the phone. I think people are really gonna love this version. Hopefully I’ll be able to put some more higher quality Zbrush models in the next update.
