Hey guys,
Wanted to let you all know that I received my EFiX chip in the mail two days ago and went to the office to rebuild my old PC that I’m not using any longer since zBrush is finally on my Mac Pro…
Well, get this.
I had a Quad core Q6600 Intel Processor with 8 gigs of RAM, and 8800GTS all Sata Drive (including the optical drive)
I bought a gigabyte motherboard from their recommended hardware list and installed everything to it.
Plugged in the EFiX chip and installed my retail copy of OS X 10.5 (won’t work the with package discs that came with my real mac pro) and WOOT! it works like a charm… botted to the DVD drive and installed OS X just like a friggin real mac pro. Had to update to 10.5.5 to get the 8800 drivers and booyow!
Man, it’s so awesome it’s not even funny, and about a million times easier than the hackintosh i attempted earlier this year.
I overclocked the 6600 to 3.6Ghz from 2.4 and it now trounces my real macpro with quad 2.66.
I definitely recommend this for anyone who doesn’t have the cash to spend on a nice new 2800 dollar mac pro at the moment. I luckily already had most of the components. I estimate had I built it from the ground up for this I would have around 1100.00 total in the rig. Amazing.
I have so far installed zBrush on it with my copy of CS4 as well and am running the hell out of it. Hasn’t crashed in two days of running full on.
I’m also running my cintiq flawlessly for those wondering about wacoms.
If you have any questions hit me up. Be glad to answer what I can…
Cheers,
Holto
