Trouble getting CurveSurface brush to work

Hi there!

I’m still at the point of learning how to use all the amazing tools in ZBrush. I have been trying to get the CurveSurface brush to work for me, like it’s shown in the tutorial I’m working through.

  1. I draw a curve from a Sphere3D.
2.I then decrease the CurveEdit radius in the stroke palette to decrease the chances of accidentally grabbing the end of the first curve.
  2. I start to draw my second curve.
This is where I run into problems. If I get the end of the new curve close enough then I get the green circle at the end of the first curve and I just end up pulling it.
If I move a little further away, then I get a straight red line joing the two curves, but when I draw the second curve, it doesn’t form anything, I just get a dotted line. I’ve tried creating this curve at least 40 or 50 times. Twice it formed something, but I don’t know why those two times.
Is there something I need to do to connect the two lines without the first one moving? I tried decreasing the snap radius, but that doesn’t help.
Your help would be much appreciated.

The curves showing on your screen grab is showing symmetry on!. If you place a curve next to the other one then it will draw a surface out. You can control the Curve Snap Distance under Stroke>Curve Modifiers.

It has been note that some curve brushes aren’t working!

Thanks for taking the time to tell/show me, Wyattfox. So you can’t have symmetry on when you use curve brushes? When I draw the curves out I just get a dotted line all the way around the shape but it doesn’t fill in. Is there some way of knowing when your cursor is in the right place near the first curve to creat a second curve?

Hi Kohulan,

Pixologic is taking awhile to confirm that a reply was sent, so I would have answered sooner! I carried out another test and all seems to be working my side (I see you haven’t updated as yet, and you are on a Mac. 4R7 Mac version has a few bugs, there is a patch). Not sure what is happening your side (you might need to show a full screen shot) so I can see whats happening. There is a video in ZClassroom http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?161537-ZBrush-4R2-ZClassroom-Movies-Updated-to-include-17-Movies That might help as well. Good Luck

Thank you so much, Wyattfox, for taking the time to help me. This is an absolutely brilliant description and you are so generous for taking the time to make it. You’ve explained exactly what I was trying to understand, about which line or circle is the one I’m looking for. I’ll try it out using the same objects you created, then I’ll try Eric Keller’s exercise again and post some images if I can’t get it to work. I know I must be getting something wrong, because other people get it to work.

I haven’t downloaded 4.7 yet, because I was afraid there wouldn’t be any tutorials and documentation for a while, and I’m holding on to the ones for 4.6 like a drowning person on a log of wood. I’m going to go through these religiously. I am amazed that pixologic have got them out so fast, given that the release of 4.7 was only a month ago.
Thanks again!
