Trouble exporting to Maya

Hello, I am having difficulty when I am exporting a ZBrush character into Maya. I decimated it as was suggested to the lowest rez I could. When I opened up Maya the character was there but I was unable to do anything with it because of the high resolution in the character. Basically Maya froze. I watched as many tutorials as I could to understand the process. But, the simple bust of a head was too much for Maya. What could I be doing wrong?
