Tricky question about animation....

I got a strange question, say I wanted to animate the critter below, and wanted it to blink.
Looking at the eyelids I can see that there is not all that much geometry there so if I were to animate it things would stretch and get faceted and stuff…
How do they (the people who know what the hell they are doing) accomplish this without it looking bad?
Where does all the extra geometry come from and how?|

you’ve got to squeeze in more lid at the lids crease.
