Transparent texture puzzlement

Hello! I have read in several threads that activating the Texture>Transparency button will make the black(0,0,0,) areas of an imported texture transparent when the texture is applied to a 3D object. I’ve been trying this with an image on a 3D plane, and always see the black regardless of whether Transparency is on or not.
Does the transparency only show on Best Render? Does the Transparency button have to be activated before importing the texture?
I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong!
Thanks for any advice!

there is no need to switch on “transparent” before importing, it works fine when switched on after applying the texture. neither to do a best render. to test that feature just apply the default texture 12 (golden star) to the plane or other 3d-object - i think its transparency is on by default, but switching it on and off will give you an idea. i assume its not true 0,0,0 black in the texture you are applying. you could check this out by filling the canvas with the texture in flat material, and dragging the cursor from the colour palettes panel onto the black of the texture without releasing the button. the r, g and b values are given below the colour panel. in case it isnt 0,0,0 you could try to increase contrast or tweak adjustments either in your image-processing app or within zbrush (and mrgbz-grabbing it afterwards). hope this helps!
