Topology Dress Issue

Hello good people!
I am requesting help, Does anyone know why the display image on the right has topology issues. It shows flat planes instead of what I sculpted. When I export it to maya to retopologize it, it looks just like the image on the right with the plane issues. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank you all very much.

Looks like you have a subtool beneath your original mesh. Your poly count seems to reflect this as well, between the total polys and active polys. Can you project the details onto your retopologized mesh?

Thanks dark messiah for the reply. I already checked and tried to zremesh it and project and everything and it still occurs. When I export that one sub tool to maya it still shows the planes like in the display view. It’s just weird because when I’m sculpting on it, it’s not showing that. It looks great when I’m sculpting on it but exporting it and the display view is all messed up. I’ll keep trying new things. If you think of anything else please let me know. Thanks a ton.

There must be geometry there. Turn on Tool>Display Properties>Double to see if it shows up.

Thanks Marcus Civis. That was definitely it. Now that I can see it , is there a way to fix it or do I simply have to resculpt it back into place? Also is there a way to avoid that in the future? I had back face masking on when sculpting the dress but I didnt think that would happen. Thanks again!!

Is it inner geometry, I don’t know how you created it. If it’s a different subtool, you can delete it. You did have the subtool pallette open? When you save a subtool, it saves all of them. You need to clone first and name well before saving. If it’s a separate polygroup, you can just delete it.

Yes, it depends on how you made the dress. If the plane is a separate polygroup it will be easy to get rid of - turn on polyframes (Shift+F) to see. If the plane not a separate polygroup then you could try Tool>Polygroups>Auto Groups. This will make the plane into a separate polygroup if it is a separate object from the dress. Then you can:

  1. Shift+Ctrl+click on the plane. This will hide everything else.
  2. Shift+Ctrl+click on the plane again. This will reverse the visibility so the plane is hidden.
  3. Press Tool>Geometry>Modify Topology>Del Hidden. This will delete the plane.

If the plane is not a separate polygroup or a separate object then it will be more difficult to get rid of. You may be able to use masking to isolate it - you can use Backface masking to help with that but remember you need to hold Ctrl while turning it on. You’ll need to experiment with what works best for the model.

Hi Doug,

Thanks for the reply. You guys are awesome. It is just one subtool. I double checked. Tried splitting just incase, I took the dress sub tool and clicked double in the display properties and it shows those weird back faces and I even tried to flip it but nothing changed at that point. Its all the same polygroup, all the same one subtool ( I had the pallet open). I even name them. I usually save ZPR when I save so everything is saved. I just want it to go back to looking like how it does when I sculpted it . Ive duplicated it and attempted all of this as well. Ill keep trying things to fix it but If you all have any other suggestions that would be wonderful. Thanks again!!!

 Showing us the wire (PolyF) might be helpful. You could reduce your polycount with DecimationMaster or and remesh it. You do have to watch the backface masking  . Polygroups can be really useful.
