to buy Silo or not to buy Silo? pros cons?

I was looking at silo in addition to Zbrush. wondering if it would be much of a compliment to Z. I am intrigued in the clay form aporach to modeling, seems much like Zbrush. But, it apears to be just a modeler. My next package i wish to spend money on needs to be able to produce animation and tie in sound. I don’t think Silo can do that. Dose Silo add much to Zbrush? Currently for a standard modeler I am Using Truespace. seems to do much of what need, and its free. Zbrush is great for detailed models, which is why im buying it. Is there a reason to buy Silo? It dosent seem to render or do animation. Or am I wrong?

This is not really the forum to discuss any applications other than Zbrush. There is a thread in the community forum called “Other Commercial Applications Discussion”, where you might find more discussion on this matter.

For what it’s worth, many people use Silo alongside Zbrush, and Zbrush greatly benefits from working alongside a traditional polygonal modeler, but thats all I will say about it here. If you wish to find out more about an application other than Zbrush, it would be better to look for information on that software’s website.

I use Modo and Silo for making base meshes for Zbrush. Silo is considerably less expensive, but Modo has more to offer. If all you need to do is edit base meshes and create UVs, I’d add Silo to your kit.

If animation is your primary concern, then you should look at a more complete package such as Maya. For more broadcast animation, C4D or Lightwave. For games animation 3DMax. If you’re hard up for funds, spend some time with Blender first.

sounds like i should stick with Truespace and Vue for my animation and renders. I wish to animate shorts and full length movies. I guess i need to do some more research on cheap packages. Maya just isnt in my budget atm. i may look into C4D.

A lot o animation is done in Maya these days–there is a learning edition out there to learn Maya while you’re saving up.

Jimmy Neutron had a lot stuff done in Lightwave if I’m not mistaken, but that was some years ago.

A number of shorts have been done in all kinds of packages including C4D and Hash A:M–there are Disney Imagineers who swear by it. (I personally do not recommend Hash A:M because of it’s “unique” and sometimes quirky approaches.)

I think you might ultimately find Truespace a little frustrating for character animation–not that you can’t do it, but I think you’ll work harder.

C4D (once you add the modules you need for CA) will likely run you as much as low-end Maya.

If your on a limited budget, you can try Blender. It’s an extremely powerful 3D application and it’s Open source which means it’s free.
