To buy or not to buy, that's my question

Hello community,

obviously I’m new and since I just tested ZBrush3.1 Trial yesterday and it was pretty awesome, I’m here to bombard you with some questions, but first of all let me tell you that english isn’t my mothertongue and even though I’ll try my best not to make any mistakes they’ll occur, I guess.
Secondly I wanna say that I’m not really sure where to post this question. Yeah, I know this is “just” a fan-site, not the real companies site, but I guess, even though there will be huge masses of fans here that see things through rose-colored classes (no offense here! just don’t know how to explain it in an other way) I wanted to ask other customers instead of those who sell the product.

Now let’s get started. First of all I wanna introduce myself, so here I am, I’m student of biology in austria and one of my major hobbies is all that’s related to fantasy. I enjoy reading good books, creating my own stories and even though I’m a really bad drawer, I enjoy to draw.

So here is where ZBrush comes into action. I’m planning on creating images of 3D-characters, monsters etc. to further edit them in an 2D-Program to get some awesome backgrounds for webdesign, as well as for my own stories.

As I’m a bad drawer, even though I practice unregularly, it’s not that easy for me to create good looking models. I tried blender but the features can’t overcome the, in my eyes, bad user interface. So I don’t use any other 3D-program than the trial of Zbrush.

Yesterday I started to test it and was amazed how I find that it’s no trouble. Sure I would need to practice a lot… .

Well, no question 'till here, hmm.
The thing is, 500€ is a bit much for a hobby just to use it once or twice, so I wanna be sure that it’s, like Adobe’s Products, something I’ll use often, something that is fun to do.

I watched some video-tutorials and the program is pretty intuitive, but the cool “sculpturing”-mode which you enter with “Ctrl+A” is not available in the Trial, since it’s 3.1 :(. I wanted to test this so badly but I guess there is no option for this mode, is there? (I think it’s called ZSpheres) And more important no option to test the newest version? Would be cool since I then could try out the (new) features I would actually buy.

Again I would surely need to practice but what do you, experienced users, say, is it possible to “draw” cool 3D-Models of humans, creatures etc. even though you’re a bad drawer on paper?

What about the price, as I said 500€ is much money, but if I use it regularly it’s okay. This is a full-license, ya? I could use it for commercial-purposes as well? I don’t wanna get an education-license since all, but those of adobe, restrict commercial use. I want to leave this backdoor open.

What about updates? I mean do you need to buy a new copy every major-release? If so how often does one occur? Or is there an other option, like an optional yearly fee to get access to newer versions?

As I said I don’t wanna get my hands on an other 3D-Program (maybe blender with the new UI but don’t account this for the question), so is it possible to achieve really awesome, real looking pictures with ZBrush as the only 2,5D/3D Tool?

Is it possible to save/export the finished model in an other format than .zbr or .obj? Something like .jpg, .png etc. so just a picture of the model?

How to pay ZBrush? Is the only way credit card? (this would be bad, since, in our country, you don’t need one and I don’t own one) Is it shipped or a download-version? If the later, can you redownload again and again or do you need to save it on a disc?

So, this was it, hopefully in the right place of the forums. Also I hope that I didn’t offend anyone withouth notice, if so, I excuse myself but advise that it wasn’t my intention.

Thanks a lot ahead,
yours Origon.

Hello.

I don’t work for the company.

“Is it possible to “draw” cool 3D-Models of humans, creatures etc. even though you’re a bad drawer on paper?”

Yes it is possible, the software would not be the issue preventing you from doing so. You would need to find the way that works for you of course.

Your commitment, time, and attitude are the greater issue. Questions are not always answered for you, and you will be responsible for deriving your own path.

"What about the price, as I said 500€ is much money, but if I use it regularly it’s okay. This is a full-license, ya? "

Yes. ~ $595

“I could use it for commercial-purposes as well?”

Yes.

“What about updates? I mean do you need to buy a new copy every major-release? If so how often does one occur? Or is there an other option, like an optional yearly fee to get access to newer versions?”

I bought the software in 2001 and have not needed to pay anything else for any major upgrade or plugin since then. I don’t know if that will continue, I suspect so, but your experience may well vary.

“As I said I don’t wanna get my hands on an other 3D-Program (maybe blender with the new UI but don’t account this for the question), so is it possible to achieve really awesome, real looking pictures with ZBrush as the only 2,5D/3D Tool?”

Yes it is. ZBrush’s renderer is very powerful indeed, I suppose few use it to its full potential. Knowledge is still very important to get the most from the tool.

“Is it possible to save/export the finished model in an other format than .zbr or .obj? Something like .jpg, .png etc. so just a picture of the model?”

Yes, Document > Export lets you save the canvas to .psd, .tif or .bmp which you can easily convert to .jpg/.png

“How to pay ZBrush? Is the only way credit card? (this would be bad, since, in our country, you don’t need one and I don’t own one)”

Check out the store options yourself or else contact the company directly.

“Is it shipped or a download-version? If the later, can you redownload again and again or do you need to save it on a disc?”

You can download it at the time of purchase. I don’t think you can redownload indefinitely, although you can order a CD at the time of purchase if you wish.

All the best.

In many ways, ZBrush will be more freeing and allow better results than drawing. You’re never committed to anything. You can freely alter proportions, poses, etc.

Being good at art goes hand in hand with ZBrush. Understanding form, proportion, expression, color, etc is important. It only provides the environment for imagination. You have to hone your skills with the tools and philosophies behind art.

Now most people who say they couldn’t learn to draw are fooling themselves, but not everyone can learn creativity. If you can write letters in such a manner that someone else will recognize the word, then you can draw. Because that’s all drawing is - creating recognizable shapes. I’m speaking in general terms, of course, natural talent and years of practice obviously matter. Read up on drawing and sculpting, and you’ll find that artists focus on individual shapes and rhythmic lines more than the actual subject as a whole.

It sounds like you have an imagination though, and ZBrush could easily become a playground for your creativity. It’s up to you how far you let it run

Dont know if you have one but youll definitly need a tablet

use your trial of 3.1…it will give you an excellent idea of what is possible.

don’t let you bother by the price! you should think of “playing golf” as a hobby!

try to get a bundle “zbrush with wacom”. 3dpowerstore sold these a few years ago… was pretty happy since then. just give 'em a call.

sunshine!

chem!

Thanks a lot!

Yeah, I can call a tablet my own, just a small bamboo fun but it’s enough for me.

Well I’ll see… the dollar/euro rate is good at the moment and I found a cheaper, official reseller with divinity3d.com

Anyways, have a nice day!
