Tips on getting feedback

Hi everyone, being a new member at ZBC I’m finding it difficult to get feedback from members, seeing as I’m a novice at ZB’ing its invaluable to recieve these pointers from the more experienced guys.
I’m not after people just praising my work (although its a confidence booster) that’ll come later, but healthy crit will help more at this stage.

So anyone got any tips on getting feedback??

thanks

Jay

I think that there is such a high volume of postings at ZBrushCentral that a lot of stuff passes under most people’s radar. I check out here most days, but usually now just check threads where the bottom row thumbnail grabs my attention - which for me is when I can see that somebody has actually created an illustration/artwork rather than just exhibiting a virtuoso sculpture. I am much more of a lurker than a commenter too, and I think I’m probably not on my own in this respect.

I have now checked out your WIPs and it looks to me like you’re off to a good start, especially for someone not using a graphics tablet. Get one! Seriously, you’ll never look back.

I have witnessed some rather remarkable transformations here. A fairly common factor in those cases was that the person concerned had one thread documenting their progress. So, that would be my advice - start a single thread that documents your journey. That way, if people find your development interesting/inspirational they can subscribe to your thread and not miss stuff that otherwise would disappear amongst many other new threads.

Other than that, don’t be too hung-up on critic - just enjoy what you do.

Good luck.

Beg…humbly.
Or offer cash.

What happened to mind altering chemicals and certain physical favors Bicc39??? You are mellowing out?!

Regarding feedback… Watch tutorials, and look at similar posts and see what people have to say. Or not to say. Posts are so similar here that it’s a blur. Once you have reached a certain amount of quality… feedback will come. Before that, only post the best stuff you have, spend some time on it before you post, if you are unsure then don’t post it. Bad posts are ruining your reputation right from the beginning and you will become like me and Bicc39… The old guy’s from the Muppet show…

It’s all so simple, make a good, simple, base mesh, detail it, texture it, done.
Do that many times and when you do not loose interest, which is not a bad thing to do, then you will have presentable and crit worthy entries in the near future.

Do NOT, take a sphere, subd the heck out of it, paint some lipstick on it and present that polyblob as the best thing since the Venus from Milo. Believe me… not a single top row entry is a polyblob. It’s all the simple workflow of creating a basemesh somewhere and then detail it in Zbrush.

Best of luck
Lemo

PS:Have a drawing before you begin and always use references. If you don’t then just look at the majority of ‘works’ in the main forum. People have fun making them, but they are inaccurate and actually a waste of time as a little more prep would already have made more than 50% of the works 100% better. But again, it’s not my intention to rain on anyones fun parade. I just feel that if you do something, you should do it right. Not that I follow my own advice… but it’s a good principle to think about when starting something.

The old guy’s from the Muppet show…

Speak for yourself, have always been grateful for my resemblance
to Miss Piggy.

Should have added.
Be sure to leave feedback for others, often.

They need you like you need them

my personal opinion: post elsewhere. unfortunately, over the years this forum has become a haven for ass-patting. it’s still a good forum, don’t take that the wrong way- but if you’re looking for honest critiques where you can improve, this is the wrong place.

I would recommend cgtalk’s new hardcore critiques forum, or even their WIP/3D forum (which is not as intense, but still provides more useful critiques than can be found here).

unfortunately, with a tool like zbrush, the entry point is very soft- so people jump in, get excited, and post whatever random lump of virtual clay appears on their monitor in the first 5 minutes. I think the ZBC crowd has become desensitized, and gives everybody a precursory pat on the head and a wane smile before opening the next thread and repeating the cycle.

If you’re interested in sculpting for game art, the Game Artisans forum is also very good. Lots of skilled people there with very interesting and useful things to say.

obviously the world is not black and white, and there are exceptions to every rule- but over the years I have found that there are better places to post if you’re looking for honest feedback that will genuinely help you get better. Come to ZBC if you want mommy to put your drawing on the refrigerator

Instant classic!

Potty training cost extra!!!

Yep not really a crit forum. Maybe if you post a lot of crits but then you mostly get an asspat back. Another brutally honest forum is polycount.

Perhaps have the courtesy to respond to your own thread.

Unfortunately, very true - not like it was in the good old days.

LOL. As Lemo said - classic!

the correct term in the english dictionary for ass licking is “pettle”
"To stroke, or otherwise pet the genetaila of another"

btw your work is ****e, keep going:D
I was tring to sound positive…ooopss

****e it!!!
