Tiling effect from zb normal map

Sometimes when i render a normal map in maya i get tiling. i know this is from the AUV uv mapping in zb. Is there a way to correct this or am i doing something wrong? normal map is in the bump node in maya. Already tried turning the filter off as suggested in another thread and it doesnt help. tiled.jpg

You might have to adjust the position of the map very slightly. A value of plus or minus .05 in the U and/or V direction can be necessary to correct for differences in the way each program registers the 0,0 point on the map.

Also, are you using ZMapper to create the normal map? If so, what settings or preset are you using?

Thanks for the reply Aurick. No, I wish I was using Zmapper, but i’m on a Mac. Yes it seems that adjusting the UV position is helping, now I just need to find the right position. One thing makes me scratch my head though…Why does it do this tiling on some models but comes out fine on others? Using the same exact technique and about the same amount of bump depth within maya. Foreground models done exact same way but no tiling…???

Cool!!

Attention all zb to maya users with this problem!! adjusting the u and v by +.05 in zb then turning off the filter (default at quadratic) under color in maya works like a charm. Works perfectly everytime for me. Thanks everyone

The reason it would happen with some models and not others is that some models are more sensitive when it comes to UV mapping.

When you assign your UV’s in ZBrush, it’s very important that you do it the right way:

  1. Apply a blank texture to the model that is the size your map will be. It should be a power of 2 such as 1024x1024, 2048x2048 or 4096x4096.
  2. Press Tool>Texture>GUVTiles or AUVTiles.

That way, your UV’s will be calculated exactly for the map you’re creating. It also helps if your model has fewer polygons rather than more. The more polys it has, the more texture space must be devoted to “in between” areas rather than actual texture – and the more sensitive the UV’s will be to stuff like offsets.

Glad you found the right settings for your needs! Now that you know them, you can use them every time for perfect results.
