The Revolutionary

First of all, thanks for all the comments. I’m glad everyone liked the piece, it was a labor of love for me. Coming in on the heals of the Scarlet Johansson piece that got so much criticism, I attempted hair for the first time, so I’m glad it all worked out.

<b>BREAKDOWN --</b> <b>Z-Brush 4</b> was such a big part of the project, I'm so glad for all the innovations made in the newest version. I don't know how I would've gotten it done without it. For the face I used the <b>Layers</b> to make different displacement maps for the face itself, and for the paint the was on his face, all while using the same model. <b>Face sculpt (Left), Sculpt for paint (Right)</b> [[](http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%27%27,%27face-sculpt.jpg%27,1,0%29)[<!---->](http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%27248532%27,%27face-sculpt.jpg%27,1,0%29) <b>Spotlight</b> made texturing the face so much easier, and let me focus on what really mattered. I used images from 3d.sk of a woman, because I wanted him to have soft skin. <b>Polypaint</b> [<!---->](http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%27248535%27,%27polypaint.jpg%27,1,0%29) I didn't realize what I was getting to with the scarf. I attempted it multiple times by trying maya cloth, building shapes and collision objects to make a starting point and it didn't work. [<!---->](http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%27248537%27,%27scarf_fail.jpg%27,1,0%29) In the end ZBrush 4 came to the rescue!!! Using the <b>Move Topological </b>Brush, and the <b>Move TopoElastic</b> Brush, I was able to start with a simple plane and sculpt into a shape of the scarf without stretch the geometry and screwing up the UVs. Awesome tool. Then I added more detail with <b>Clay Buildup.</b> [<!---->](http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%27248536%27,%27scarf.jpg%27,1,0%29) Special thanks to Sewly, his custom cloth brushes work well for wrinkles, and I used them for the shirt. Heres a link to his brushes - [<b>Sewly.com</b>](http://www.selwy.com/2009/zbrush-clothes-tutorial/)[<!---->](http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%27248531%27,%27cloth.jpg%27,1,0%29) Here is the mesh and wire. [<!---->](http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%27248533%27,%27mesh.jpg%27,1,0%29) Here are the breakdown of the render layers. I had different setups for each layer of paint so the would have different textures in the end. [<!---->](http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%27248534%27,%27passes.jpg%27,1,0%29) If anyone has any other questions, I'll will be glad to field them.

Nice one so real! Thanks for breakdown! I need to try out those methods u mentioned for cloth! This needs to be top row! 5*

Really appreciate…

It will be tough on artists for a while after the Scarlet-gate, but I truly appreciate the breakdown…shows great humility that you have included other artists’ website and gave credit for the cloth brushes…nicely done! Should hit TR any day now!

what country are those colours?

Fantastic aswell… is the paint on his face actual geometry or just a displacement ? or some other method?

oops sorry i didnt read everything properly… found it.

thanks for the tut

Very nice work. Like the paint very much. A little yellow added to the eyes and some breakup on the lower lids would go a long way. Also stronger depth on the ears. Very nice work. Top row.

got to make top row, this is just great , looks so close to a real photo ,
brilliant job :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1:

I guess I shouldn’t compare but I will make an exception. This is way better than the Scarlett Johanssen pic in my opinion. Black and white is easier to get away with a lot of things, the hair was from a photo and to me the skin didn’t look real. The eyes were the best part.

In this case, it’s such an interesting picture and the execution is fantastic. Really well done.

reallu nice work,we would like to see how you make the scarf, and also the paint layer on face, may a video tutorial will help us,thanks, first i think its all done in zbrush,i love the eyes…

This is really awesome work!!! Thanks for showing us the break down.:sunglasses:

great work man … :+1:

Lovely work! I love how the painted face texture adds to the depth.

Is that the default maya hair?

Holy…this is so amazing…so realistic… :+1: :+1:

Congratz on TR :+1: ! Thanks for posting the breakdown :sunglasses: :+1: .

Well done dude…! How you did the hair? Thanks for sharing and congrats…:+1:
Cheers!!

absolutely amazing! luv the face paint texture. top row well deserved.

ovely piece and congrats on the top row.
I didn’t see the “background story” of the image (I might of missed it), but it kinda looks like the Egyptian revolution.

pro piece! thanks so much for sharing everything

keep rockin :+1:

I’m so happy, for all the praise. I appreciate the critiques also.

@ tyrellcorp - The colors are from Egypt. During the protest in Cairo this is how some people painted their face in support of their country.

@ Monray - If you want a great beginner tutorial for hair watch Tony Reynolds - Portrait Creation video. I used a lot of the techniques on this project, and it helped a lot.

@ ashaiad - You pretty much nailed it. I wanted to make a kid that looked like he would take on the government all by himself…

THX guys and gals, I’m around for more questions.
