"The New Guy"

Hey there folks,

I started this bust a couple of days ago and thought it would be a good idea to post the process while I develop it.

Before I post the images, there are a few things I have to say: I don’t like wip threads; I don’t draw my concepts and everything goes “on the fly” during the creative process; I can be VERY chaotic on most of the time, suddenly changing everything, therefore making your comments useless, a sad waste of your precious time, IMO.
But because I had a hard time doing the “making of Hulk”, as a lot of the old tools were overwritten and very a few images of the process were saved, and as I simply can’t record a video of myself working (sorry Ryan  ), I decided to take screenshots of every step and change on the design and post it here for anyone interested.

Ok, so here’s the history: i’m a long time fan of military miniatures. I’d collect every Mcfarlane military stuff if I could (I can’t). So I started developing some rough ideas on zbrush so as to clarify my ideas. I used only primitives for this sketches: spheres, cilinders and extracted subtools, everything inside zb. The idea was to make a soldier from the Vietnam war era.

But when I was looking for references, I saw lots of pictures of boyish looking soldiers, and thought “man, they’re almost teenagers!”. War is a cruel thing, imagine being young and full of dreams and end in a battle field. Imagine being skinny and weak and young looking in the middle of all that older soldiers with tough looks. So I changed the concept from an average soldier to a young man who just arrive at the camp. Afraid, solitary, recently arriving to the “adult life”, but trying not to demonstrate it to anybody. How would he look? So I made this quick base in XSI and developed a “face” for him. And because i think he would be nervous and trying to look “older”, a cigarette would make sense.

Then I started taking pictures of myself, trying to get nice fold references for the uniform. And one thing that came to my mind was: “what if he holds the backpack strap as a student would do?”. Because I think that a nervous boy would try to grab something so his hands won’t shake. here’s the comp with my photo and the head:

So I modeled an arm for the head I had (I also added a cube to increase the torso area). With everything in place it was just a matter of merging it all together so as to make a retopology using Topogun, and using “project all” to put all subtools into a single piece.

I used the Zsphere rigging to pose the arm and sholders and transpose for the fingers.

And here it is after a few more tweaks:

Now I’m going to start adding clothes, equipment and refining the existing mesh. I’m working on my free hours so this will take some time
Hope you like the reading.

Regards
Fabricio

That`s amazing dudde!! :+1:

Great Character, very natural look.

Awesome man, and also, for someone that doesn´t like wip threads I must say you did a very pleasant thread to read
Keep it up man

really inspiring fabricio
keep it up buddy…

That’s some beautiful work you have there. Thanks for showing the process. You inspired me to give ZSphere skeletons a try. Pretty cool work flow for the most part.

Thanks for sharing-NickZ.

that´s both very cool and very interesting! keep´em coming! :+1:

I really lovr the way the sculpture is growing. Really well executed.

About the sistem of the unify the meshes and retopology, very interesting, never tested before but looks very usefull. Honestly I don´t understand the exac process.

All the best, Arturo

Very nice indeed. It reminds me of my grandad who served at 17.
Your process is excellent thanks a heap for sharing.Look forward too watching your sculpt grow :)…

Hi Arturo,

here is a more detailed explanation (I hope). Basicaly i had 3 subtools, and made the retopology covering them 3 and added it as a forth subtool.
I subdivided it 6 times then used the “ProjectAll” button, that basically shrink wraps the selected subtool (the retopology) over the other visible subtools (head, arm, torso). As you can see, due to the seams between the original 3, the process give me a bad looking mesh, BUT there’s a trick: before hiting “ProjectAll”, be sure to store a morph target of your subdivided and cleaned mesh. That way you can “paint out” the bad parts of the reprojected mesh using the “morph brush”.

Collings: Thanks a lot bro. You’re right about the neck… i’m afraid the collar will cover it a lot more than expected so I made it longer. When i put the clothes on, I’ll see if it is still too long and correct it. I’m looking fir that feel of him “checking the surroundings”, you know?
How’s montreal? Have it start cooling? I’m still waiting for my visa :frowning: Hope I won’t miss the first snow.

Darukin: Thanks a lot.

Grassetti: Hey raf, I read the Ultimates comics finally! Your Thor makes totally sense to me now ;D

TyShelton: Thanks Ty. Always a pleasure visiting your portfolio by the way.

sasquatchpoacher: Thanks Gregory. I also love yours

armyoflee: Thanks Lee. Congrats on making top row. Awesome piece (as always)

metamesh: Hey Alex, how are you doing? Thanks for commenting.

DHARMAESTUDIO: Already replied you Arturo, but didn’t say how much I LOVE your pieces. VERY inspirational. Keep them coming. My reference folder isn’t satisfied yet.

DELTATHUND3R: Thanks a lot!

freakin wicked looking so far.
Will be keeping an eye on this thread

he’s looking fantastic so far Fabricio! :+1:

Amazing feeling in this model!

Fabricio, I use the same method you have describe above most of the times. Couple things that I do that help when projecting details are

-Smoothing(either the original model or retopo, it depends) the area and reprojecting
-Smoothing the bad area and just using project brush(thou this is a tricky one and can create more mess)
-Hiding the rest of the model (keeping only the problem area) and reprojecting the details.
-Morphing method that you have described already
-During retopo I sometimes try to not to put concave areas as in the original model. Being conscious about curves, grooves, concave surfaces is really helpful so that you can plan ahead. Because sometimes cleaning up takes more time than remaking problem areas on the new model.

None of these are concrete solutions but can ease the pain.
