The most valuable feature of the new update is....

Make this your thread, list them all.
Not seeing many in the gallery at the moment.

This isn’t a “sexy” answer, but I can’t overstate how much the ability to freely zoom in in sculpting and topology modes without limitation has increased my overall enjoyment of the program. I really hated the zooming issues you’d run into in 3.1

The significantly increased performance is also unexpected and very nice. It is simply a pleasure to sculpt even the densest of meshes now.

Those are the things that are making the most immediate difference in my work right now. I have not used enough of the other new features yet to really form a favorite there, although Zspheres 2 is a strong contender. I find that much more helpful, personally, than Zsketching.

Great answer, non sexy:D
Opened program and tried it, nice.

Also non-sexy. When Photoshop CS4 came out, one of the best
things I found after plunking down the bucks was that you could
increase or decrease the brush size while holding down ALT.
Not sexy, but valuable.
Thank you.

The scaling issues on import and export seem to be fixed. That comes as a happy surprise :+1:

“new” update?
3.5?
No, has to be 3.5R2.

So - what I really like is the way that the user is forced (has the chance) to dive right into things that are absolutely useless to know - if you are not a programmer.

So now I got new (valuable?) knowledge about one important question, like: “… how does a piece of software react that is supposed to run under Windows (a few versions), if the rules that you can apply to coding such a thing (like following certain protocols (sorry for my bad English) simply are neglected?”

The answer is simple: it does not work as it could/should!

To be honest, about four days ago my ignorance would have let me beilieve, that the above information/knowledge might be absolutely useless.
Now I enjoy the part, that the makers of ZBrush (actual version) must have thought just like I did.

There are a few other (minor) things to enjoy (like leaving out features that proved useful and had only recently been added to the previous version - just shows how important they had been), but yes: most important is to be forced to deal with not USING the program, but MAKING it work.
Some might call this beta testing, but these are ignorants.

Almost forgot: it is FREE, so I certainly have cause to enjoy all this even more?
Certainly!

As I peruse the new version, I ask myself a question.
If, down the road, I cannot reinstall the plugins, is the
new kid worth it?
A resounding no…(to me)

I was working with 2.x all the time as it was more stable and had some features I need. This version is now as stable and as versatile for me as the older one. Besides all the great inovations there is one thing I truly loathe. I know… strong word… But I am passionate about it. And that is the alpha brush behavior. Why in the name of Pixol’s is this prescribed hideous radial fade there? There is a radial fade slider… So why fudge up any and every rectangular alpha? Now I have to select an alpha, create a stencil, move that into place, then select a new brush, switch of the alpha, drag rect the brush onto the stencil and repeat100 times. GAHHHHHHH. It would be nice if the alpha I select would be the alpha I draw with and not altered unless I chose to put a radial fade onto it. This is the single feature which imho was broken early on in the new releases.

Besides that… I’m all around very happy. And I will be ecstatic once the decimation master is up and running again.

Time will tell.
Infinite zoom is great. Zspheres 2 are great.
Hard surface brushes are feeling veeeery weird at the moment.
And the floor makes me dizzy.

Think positive: you did not delete 3.1?

The new ghost transparencies used for subtools. It makes resizing and placement much easier.

  • well I keep the floor off at all times - no need for it really
  • I love the zsphere sketching - it’s brilliant
  • noise, noise, noise - adds a very realistic feel to stuff instantly.
  • hardsurface brushes, I will agree, feel strange - especially the line ones…

all in all the only thing I’m really missing from 3.1 is ZApplink and well Decimation Master’s come in useful a lot lately so I’m waiting for an update on this one as well.

I like the new brushes, being able to set map sizes (not having to go the long way round as in earlier versions!), the new texturing options (still a long way to go though…), it’s faster, you can now see the brush “ring” go around the object!, the lazy mouse new stuff. Plus other stuff I can’t think of at the moment!

Sorry, the spheres 2 leaves me cold - I just don’t set up my sculpts using this method.

Basically its all good progress, however there are new quirks to get used to - I guess that will always happen with new tools…

I’m pretty happy about generating maps from HD geometry. But I haven’t had time to get really “dirty” with ZSphere 2 or the new brush tricks.

Mwahaha! Go forth, my little early adopters! Work through those kinks! Report those bugs!

I shall join you in a few months, once the dust settles. Until then I’m perfectly happy with 3.1 - at least I know its idiosyncrasies.

Is everyone experiencing an increased number of graphic artifact bugs on the canvas every now and then?

…to have a button “Wsize” next to “new document”

… ok ok, Zsphere2/Zsketch is very neat, too

hmm…then there is the grid function, better perspective AND the perspective doesnt change when hiding parts of a model. :stuck_out_tongue:
