The Leviathan

Inspired by so many amazing works on this subject I decided to make my own interpretation of the Leviathan.

It was after seeing the work of Jeff Chang in the amazing book Spectrum 17,
that I really felt like doing my Leviathan. Also the famous Magic the Gathering card illustration by Tedin, was a strong reference.

I wanted it to seem believeable, like a rare creature encounter of massive proportions. I felt the need to put a human element for scale besides the first person point of view.

I initially thought of another option, but it would give the leviathan a predator feel and I didn’t want it to be a giant killer but rather a giant errant who has been swimming through the oceans for a really long time.

As usual, all done in Zbrush, Max and Vray. Post production in Fusion, Photoshop and After Effects.

Comments are more than welcome

awesomeness.

dummy here. how can i render like that?

Very nice concept! I appreciate the fact that you didn’t want it to be too much of a predator. I think what you’ve got here makes it seem more likely to have existed at some point or another. However, maybe the rendering could be adjusted to give it some more of a shocking presence. I’d love to see this same Leviathan in some really dirty/murky waters. Or water at night with an underwater spotlight on it or something, give it some more mystery. Great stuff, though! :+1:

Thanks for the kind words!

I am a Vray intensive user and fan. Its very fast and with great control on the results. The lighting plays a very important roleas well as the textures, the materials and the model. But in the end there is a big jump from render to final image done in post production. I’ll try to post a raw render for you to compare.

If I may give some advice: Learn some node compositing (Fusion, Nuke,…)so that you know what elements you’ll need to render in order to have full control on your final look.

In the end I felt that I could go more for the WOW effect but decided to keep it more soft in order to try to get a more believable feel. I completely understand what you mean, though. And would also like to do some other more mysterious versions.
