The Legend of Ram - Hanuman

Han1000.jpg

Second in the series that I’ve been wanting to do on the Ramayan, Hanuman is finally completed. This started off as me wanting to do just the sculpt, but ended up as an illustration that I’m quite happy with
Hanuman is the monkey god of strength who is a great devotee of Lord Ram and proved to be a huge advantage in Ram’s war against Ravan.
This was also an attempt to work on an illustration that wasnt aggressive as are all my previous stuff. I wanted to capture a very calm and peaceful mood with this one, without losing out on the character’s personality.
Base model in maya, detailed in zbrush, rendered in max/mental ray. Post in photoshop.

You said(I wanted to capture a very calm and peaceful mood with this one, without losing out on the character’s personality.)that is fine but in some cases some artists tend to follow the style of others, here in my opinion you did’t capture this perfectly,As far as illustration is concerned light is bit ambient too,and in your first image the right leg doesn’t seems fine to me.this is looking as a monkey rather then Hanuman(god).you presented it as a normal monkey, but not as a divine power, after watching this i can’t feel the divinity of hanuman(god),i saw your last work here (Lord Ram)and i felt the same thing that time.i m not pointing out your workstyle here but just sharing what i m feeling after seeing this.So to be the special one doesn’t mean that we need to present it in western style,or try to make it comical rather then the power(divine).well i don’t wanna hurt your feelings.best of luck.

Very very nice interpretation of Hanuman… I like the form and everything…perhaps he can be a bit more hairy  though

really like it too…you can definitly feel the calm and peacefull mood you wanted…i agree with solidsnakexxx about the fur though…it should be denser with part much longer than others …
otherwise top raw to my opinion…

thankyou very much SolidSnakexxx and abe_Tamazir. I didnt wanna push the hair any further as I didnt want it to overpower the scene.I was pushing for the amount of hair to be in between an ape and a human.
Here are a couple of zbrush snapshots of the sculpt.
