The Lava Baron (inc 3d print) - Glen Southern & Wayne Robson

[LAVA-1-SM.jpg]

Here’s something from the upcoming game The Salvation Prophecy done by Glen Southern and myself that I was lucky enough to have 3d printed (for nothing as it happens!) This isn’t the in game version but a mess around I asked if I could do afterwards as I liked the character so much. Sorry we can’t show the final full textured in game version.

The 3d print was done by Kennier Dufort as a test run of their machines to see how far the culd push them, as they usually do 3d prints for the medical and engineering professions. So as a result it didn’t cost me a penny. (I gave it to my dad for his birthday a few day ago.)

The models polycount was that high on the main model they couldn’t actually load it to print it out so had to go for lv 4 instead lol. (I think its safe to say that keniier dufort wil be investing in more high end machines soon. lol) Which was a bit of a shame as the machines they have are easily able to handle the detail.

Glens done some amazing designs for this game, hopefully at some point we’ll get to show them.
Enjoy

That sculpt is crazy!! Wow. I hope ZB becomes the standard for organic 3D prints.

So thats where Mr Southern has been hiding…well you both make amazing art and this print is simply great. :+1:

If you don’t mind me asking, what brand of printer was it? We’re using a 3D Systems InVision XT and an Objet Eden 333 here at the studio. The InVision gets 600 dpi in XYZ and the Eden gets 1200 in Z and 600 in XY, but because of differences in the print head and process, they both look fairly equal. Also, maybe I just missed it, but how tall is that fellah?

that’s awesome, the print came out great!
how long does it take process-wise to make
something of that scale?

character is really cool as well :+1:
nice work…

AVTPro: As far as many are concerned it already is lol… An STL export would make things just perfect, although thats no big deal really as its easy enough to convert the OBJ. (Although Kinnier Dufort did that for me in this case.)

GiantSun: Ah Glens around  You’ll hear more about what glen (and myself) are doing in due course I promise.

Poboyross: I’ve not got the info to hand right now, but I’ll try and hunt it out for you. (I’m in the middle of sorting out to move house so things are rather chaotic this side. )

Super Glitcher: They started it away one night, by the next morning it was already on its way towards me in the post. Very fast turnaround time, with no delays or messing around. Time wise it really depends on the depth of the model while being printed out in the job so inclination is REALLY important along with the physical ammount of resin it’s going to you… more resin = more money and more time.

chyea! thanks for the info… that’s ‘really’ fast.
I’ve heard a couple number over the last six
months are so, well out of ‘hobbyist’ range

Maybe a few years down the line it will be
more practical. Hey, gives me time to get
better at sculping though eh?

Thanks-

Well had I actually ‘paid’ for this (as opposed to getting it for nothing…which I know is gonna annoy the hell out of a lot of people lol) it would have cost about £115 which looking at it reallly isn’t too bad. That price was for a hollow honeycomb fiulled as opposed to solid resin like the one here though. (A solid one like this would have cost me £360.)

For those interested theres a vid on my site blog covering a few tips tricks etc to get the best out of a 3d print. (Obviously those considering me satan incarnate need not sulley their eye’s lol.)
