"The Gate" Creature Finished

After nearly a couple of years away from Z brush, I decided to try and get back into it. Heres a work in progress. Its based on the creature from the movie “The Gate”, the original stop motion creature built by Randall William Cook.
I`m also working on the whole body as well and will post more progress shots later.

I like your style, the anatomy is subtle and yet interesting, and the head has an interesting shape.
Also, tentacles are always a cool thing to have.

Edit: This is too awesome a tab for me to close, so I’ll just bookmark it and come back later to see it again.

Also, could you please tell me what technique are you using in order to sculpt the head separately from the body? Or did you create both as a single mesh and hid the body while modeling the head?

Very cool and disturbing! Great sculpt.

looks awesome. it is an asset that will be used for anything other that a model showcase? as it would be interesting to learn about the characters expressions and movement.

Hey Jamie!
Great to see your digital stuff posted here. The model is looking sweet proportion wise. I can’t wait to see it all finished… and textured
Have some fun with poly paint man! You are just so great of a traditional artist that I think you would easily kick ass adapting your techniques to the good and old ZBrush.

I can’t wait to see more,
-Kris

What a totally random yet totally awesome concept! I thought this movie was pretty good for it’s time and definitely creepy. I watched it again like two months ago. Your sculpt is spot on my friend. I can’t wait to see the finished textured version! Any idea what you are going to do for a base?

CJ

Thanks a lot guys!

Cheshire Cat: I created the head as a seperate subtool, and then combined it with the body.

idrisguitar: This is done purely for practice and learning Zbrush3.

Antropus: Thanks Kris! Yeah, Im goning to try out polypaint on this one. I did a bit more with the texture today, heres another pic.

those sculpts on ur site are incredible! truly beautiful works of art. like your zbrush stuff too!

the works on the site are really great.
what do you need zbrush for! hehe i guess its a bit faster
but it aint gonna get more realistic than your real life works  :+1:

Wow! You did this demon exactly as it is in the movie! Great!
By the way, great works of sculpture in your website!

great stuff. a classic creature. glad to see you jumping into zbrush so much.

Heres a progress update. Using this guy as polypaint practice. First time to use it, so Im treating it the same way as I would to paint something real.

I did sew this trehad till today, I always fell that loose a lot of good thread because my country timing, when I´m sleeping most of the rest are posting:)

Dear Jamie, you know how to paint a creature, I really like your tribute to this creature, looking very cool.

Arturo

Hey Arturo, thanks man. I just had to get back into Zbrush. Seeing the work you do and the other amazing artists here is very inspiring.

Now THAT is art. Pure amazing art. Dude there are no words to describe how impressed I am with your real life sculpture work. If I had your skills in that area I would probably never touch a computer.

The creature model is looking fantastic as well especially with the paint job.

CJ

Jamie,

the painting job looks really cool. About the model, it takes some time to learn the tools. There are some brushes that combined with lazymouse can be super precise. I like the brush 49+lazymouse, in various sizes, for a more controlled lines, for example. I feel like the main forms of the sculpt are all there but the details on top feel a little random. I would like to see them a little more controlled but as I said, takes some time to learn the tools. Once you had done more exercises in ZBrush, you will really feel more comfortable and then you will be able to use your INSANELY good traditional skills, adapting your techniques to the digital media. Then my friend, you will be unstoppable
Please, don’t stay way from ZBrush for another year! Keep creating something on it and posting here from time to time. I can’t wait to see what you will do with it after you learn those tools and workflows.

All the best and keep inspiring us Jamie!
-Kris

can’t wait to the see the final model

cj3d82: Thank you

Antropus: Kris, thanks for the feedback and helpful hints. Ill try out your suggestions. I do plan to keep using Zbrush until I get used to it. Im still trying to get over its learning hump and struggling a bit with Z spheres and getting a good enough geometry to sculpt to the resolution Id like.
