The Centurion

Hi folks. This here is a project I just submitted into the Academy of Art University Spring Show.

Although I did design him, he was inspired by the works of Wayne D. Barlowe and I wanted my character to be able to exist in the world he created yet still be able to create something new of my own. All I can say is that he is a master of original concepts and surface texture details, this was quite a challenge and a blast to work on. It isn't even approaching the level of complexity his paintings have! Anyway, Eventually I'll add more details in some of the smoother areas, and of course UV, texture, render...you know, the works. The brick is one of Barlowe's ideas. The demons in his world ran out of building supplies in hell, so they resorted to turning human souls into bricks!

This is really an amazing piece. My only crit would be to make the pose look more dramatic. He currently looks a little stiff.

Thanks! I agree that the pose can be altered, but (this is going to sound like BS) stiffness is actually what I want. I wanted to convey this feeling of having been in hell for countless millenea and just being emotionless and drained. I tried to make him almost seem part of the rock he’s standing on as well with the stone surface I sculpted around various parts of him. I definately want to change how he’s holding the brick. I keep hearing people say that he looks like he’s about to eat it! haha!

this work is freakin awsome!! i love the character. I think if you go another subdivision level and add some more details this would be great top row matreial. I actually think the pose is fine. I think you could do some more with the cape but overall this is one my favourite pieces ive seen in a long time. keep up the good work and keep on zbrushin!!

Wow, thanks a lot nervink! I’d love to get at least one piece on the top row! Yeah unfortunately if i subdivided everything one more time i’d be up to 40 million polys…not really a good idea hehe. But you’re right, there is still a bit more details I could push.

If anyone reads this, what would you folks recomend I do to the cape? I obviously should subdivide once more and detail it. My teacher was saying to possibly not make it curl up in the back, because it looks a little too perfect. What do you folks think?

This is my first post on the site!..arent you so lucky :P…

I love the super detail in it and the overall design. I personally like the way the cloak is, its more dramatic IMO. So dont change it!..you already put in so much time already you dont want to drown it out with detail everywhere. other wise the audience wont have anywhere to rest their eyes @_@

Great job! :+1:

Thanks Jon! Yeah, presenting something for the spring show is a bit different than for a demo reel. I was definately thinking about composition for the audience, trying not to break that rule of having too much detail everywhere, so you can let the audience eye wander around the piece. I kinda went crazy with detail so I figured adding the depth of field blur would help keep attention just in the front. I think for my demo reel it will definately have more close ups and better lighting for sure hehe.
