Texture with layers?

I imported a model (fully UV mapped) into ZB and want to paint the texture.
Now I have a base texture and want to add additional detail. Is it possible to do that on a kind of separate layer, so that I can export it into a separate texture file with a transparent background? Or at least into a psd file with several layers?
Just creating a new texture is not possible because it overrides the base texture, but the base texture should still be visible in ZB because otherwise I don’t know exactly where to paint the additions.

Texture painting does not currently support layers. What you could possibly do is polypaint with different object layers (Tool>Layer menu). When you’re ready to export, you would turn off all layers except the one that has the details you want to export and then convert polypaint to texture. Repeat for your other layers. Then you could composite them together in Photoshop.

Sounds good, but doesn’t work

Only the 3D changes are stored in the layers, all the color information goes right into the texture. E.g. when I use the standard brush together with color to paint a blue bump on a layer, I can switch off the bump by de-activating the layer but the blue dot stays there.
That’s a real shame because I love to work with layers! Well, it would have been to good to be true…
