Taking the 64-bit plunge

Hello all,

I am thinking about moving on up to a 64-bit OS to take full advantage of the 4g of ram in my machine. Also I have a few 64-bit compatible apps (Maya being one). I mainly use ZB3, Maya 8.5, Silo, and MB. I am looking to attain a smoother workflow when working with high polycounts.

Now the question is should I purchase XP Pro 64-bit or Vista Business 64-bit?

I have read about alot of horror stories with Vista and am really reluctant to purchase it, BUT I know it is the wave of the future and with time it will get better.

At this point, I realize that XP 64 might be more solid (at the moment) and a better choice if I want a smooth workflow, but I am also leaning towards Vista because it is the wave of the future.

Does anyone have luck using the mentioned apps in Vista or is it a crap shute? Thanks for your help and influence in my decision making.

i have windows xp 64 and I am getting pushed into vista 64 slowly.
Reason being I am finding xp pro 64 less and less compatiable with games, drivers ect ect . So as a person in that situation I am saying to you I would go Vista. You can turn all the fancy stuff off and it runs rather well I heard.

My 2 cents;)

I do understand. Eventually everyone will have to dive into Vista whether it is for better or for worse. But I plan on keeping my current rig for 1.5-2 years, and I really do not want to be “beta testing” an OS if it is going to cut down on my productivity. That is the only thing that worries me is the loss of being able to be productive due to an OS.

So that being said, does anyone currently use Vista and feel that they can still use their beloved 3d apps as usual? This might be the toughest descision I’ve had to make in awhile :frowning:
