Tablet Pen vs. Mouse?

I’m a total newb, so pardon my question if this is silly.

I’ve been recently trying to get into zbrush to sculpt human faces. I’m finding it a little frustrating though. It’s hard to sculpt things the way I want them.

This could be for any of these reasons:

  1. I have no prior real world sculpting experience
  2. I’m still a beginner at zbrush (I’ve watched some tutorials, including digital tutor’s intro to zbrush)
  3. I am using a mouse, not a tablet pen.

My question is how big of a disadvantage do you think #3 (using a mouse) is? I’m thinking of buying a tablet pen to see if it would dramatically improve my zbrush sculpting ability. Do you think it will? Is using a mouse with zbrush the same as trying to mow a lawn with scissors?

And finally, I know everyone here recommends the Wacom Intuous. But anyone out there using other tablets with zbrush and happy with it?

Thanks for your help!

A tablet will not improve your skill. It makes many things easier to do, but you shouldn’t expect it to be a magic bullet.

Ultimately, tablet vs. mouse is a matter of personal preference. There are many fine artists out there who use only a mouse. There are also many who swear by their tablets.

Regardless of manufacturer, I do recommend a tablet that has pressure sensitivity.

I agree, a tablet isn’t like a magic wand or anything. But i couldn’t do anything in Zbrush without it.

I know a couple of people that have the wacom Bamboo, as well as the graphire. they both love their tablets.
