Tablet Laptops and ZBRUSH3

I’m looking into getting a tablet laptop primarily for ZBrush use, as well as PS and other 3d packages. My main concern is getting one fast enough in both processor speed as well memory and videocard. My other option is gettting a regular desktop replacement laptop and a 12 in cintiq, but that is a pretty expecive option. I’m wondering if anyone has any personnal preferences or experience with different tablet PCs and the Brush, Thanks alot for your comments and advice in advance

tablet pc is more novelty… invest in the laptop if u really need mobility, and use a wacom like everyone else

So you think none of the current line of tablet PC are good enough for Zbrush use, Ive been working with a cintiq at work I dont want to regress back to a tablet, but I dont want to be locked at my desk at home. I’ve been thinking about a 12 inche cintiq as they are prettty awesome, but I was hoping to only have purchase a single piece of hardware.

I have a Toshiba Portege M400 which works fine with ZB3.1 even though it only has onboard intel graphics. I’ve had it for 2 years and have had no problems. The latest spec is the M700 which has core2duo and a slightly lower screen rez.

I went for this one because it is 14" (therefore portable), can use wacom drivers direct with pressure sensitivity (not as good as a cintiq but not really noticeable IMHO), with the extra battery pack it will do about 8hrs on one charge. It also comes with integral DVD/CD largish HDD plus loads of ports etc for connectivity.
The native screen rez is 1200x1024 (I think - don’t have it in front of me right now) which at the time was a lot higher and better contrast than the Lenovo, HP etc competition. The only downside is lack of NVidia card for more serious gaming, and perhaps too much bloatware initially (but this is easily cleared off).

I also use it for CAD, 3D Studio Max (definitely need a 3 button wheel mouse for these though), Painter and photoshop (best on a external monitor for colour calibration etc).

Whats you maximum Zbrush polycount with your laptop?

hmm I will have to check but its over 6 million polys running on 2Gb of RAM. The machine takes 4 and you would need this if its running Vista (I’m on XP Pro Tablet Edition) - the new model may take more RAM than this though and its now much cheaper. RAM seems to be the limiting factor rather than the graphics card but i haven’t really tweaked the program prefs much.

I’ll wait till the new apple touch screen lap’s are coming out.
