symmetry sculpting with other half hidden?

I am working on a full body character’s hands right now. I have hidden all but his right hand and sculpted with symmetry on but it didnt effect the hand on the other half. Is there a way to sculpt symmetrically with parts hidden?

Reason I ask is because if I have to have both hands on and sculpt on one its really hard to get the camera to pivot around just the hand I want.

Thanks for any help

Yes, super easy, you unhide your model, or both hands, you Mask the hand that you did the work on, then goto Tool : Deformation: SmartResym, this should copy your work from one side to the other.
For best results, start at your lowest subdivision level, do the masking and smartresym, then go up a level, repeat the resym, and contnue doing so until you get to your highest level.

Spaceboy,

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I have noticed the resym does some quirky things at times so I try not to use it unless I have to. Kindof a long story but even if I mask off the model perfectly I have noticed strange things happening so I try to avoid this unless I have to.

Anybody besides spaceboy have a solution besides using resym?

Thanks

i’m guessing you mean something like distortion along the center, the problem is that sometimes your model can lose its actual center, so when you do resym it pushes more on one side of your model, it is acutally functioning correctly though. usually the best thing to do is goto the lowest level and hit the other single “resym” button first then attempt to do “smart Resym”. for something simplle like the hands, its best to just have both hands visible and one masked. the sculpting should transfer over, however you may get some slight distortion when you unhide say in the wrist area, just smmoth it out and resulpt. lastly if you wish you can always try Unify, this attempts to find the actual center of your model, but it will change the models size occassionaly.
by the way, if there is a better method other than smart resym i’d like to hear it.
the only more intensive method i could think of is to make a clone, mirror it and use one of the projection methods.
i don’t particulaly appreciate the “besides spaceboy” as if you just dismiss my advice, but to each their own. good luck

well, you can’t do what you’re trying to do without resym.
but if you want to have both hands shown while you sculpt. on the right hand side, click “local” and your camera will pivot, and zoom, to the last point you sculpted. So even though you have both hands showing, you’re really only working on one, and moving like you only had one showing.

this doesn’t really help your after-the-fact resym. but should help you a ton in the future.

goast666 you are correct, however the problem one runs into in that situation is you are limited in the amount you can scale into your model. either way its a trade off. but both ways have their benefits:)
