Symmetry - Mirror off on on?

I just now noticed that with (M)irror off on ssymetry the Nudge tool does not mirror properly, or how i want it to. Up until this point i always turned M off for mirroring because it seemed with M on for the Inflate tool i would sometimes get problems… This always seemed fine for me until i used the nudge tool and finaly noticed that it doesn’t mirror right

So heres my question. should i ALWAYS have [M]irroring on at ALL times? when do i need this on and when do i need it off??!?

For now i will leave it on but i still do not know why inflate worked fine and nudge does not (with it off). For instance if i inflate on a characters side it seems like it would make a divit on the other side if i had M off in accordance with the behavior of Nudge with M off…???

With Mirror turned on, anything you do on one side is exactly duplicated on the other side as if there was a mirror held up to the side you’re working on. So if you move a vertex toward the center line on one side, it will also move toward the center line on the other.

If you turn Mirror off, then points moved on one side will be moved in the same direction on the other side. If you move a point toward the center line on one side, the same point will move away from the center line on the other side.

The bottom line: Don’t turn Mirror off if you want to keep a symmetrical model. Turning Mirror off will allow you to move symmetrical points, but they will not remain symmetrical when you’re done. Every edit will move the model increasingly out of symmetry.

woah!

see i’m sure i’ve been using Inflate and Pinch for ages using X symmetry on with out Mirror on. and i even have a model right now i’ve been doing that with and all seems pretty well.

Have i been messing it up? it doesn’t appear for all intesive puproses to have done any real damage. Only nudge seemed to make the real difference.

I’ll be leaving Mirror on from now on
