Swat-Style Character

Hey guys, new character in progress here. Gettin started on the vest and whatnot. Tips, crits, and comments always welcome.

you want to have the human anatomy modeled first, at least the rough proportions, then model the clothes on the dude’s body.

Actually i did do that, sorry i didn’t make it clear that there was more to it. The vest is just where i started, so i didn’t see any point in posting images of a less than flattering stand-in body.

On to progress!
The legs are just in there for the sake of a lower body, i know they look awkward. The torso and head are the only places where i have given any attention. C&C always welcome, thank you!

Very nice start. try to make the sewing thread spaces smaller if you want to achieve realism. Good luck

Eiad thanks for that! Better? I tried them smaller but you kind of lose them at a distance…

Update: Worked on folds in the cloth mostly as well detailing on the jacket.

Looking good! How did you get the uniformed honeycombs on the thop part of the jacket? I’m a znoob

Started well; from the front he looks like a man, but from the side he looks like a child? Head and neck proprtions to the body are all wrong in the side view.
That said, it’s quite remarkable how you’ve achieved that, and I can’t help but ponder how much fun there’d be in messing that?!

Worth having a look at refs on how the clavicle and neck join together too

g’luck

@ Muddpit: Thanks man! I actually did it probably the hard way… Im no expert lol. I had the clay brush on with drag dot setting and a hard edged circle alpha! I couldn’t seem to get the stroke right with lazy mouse or anything so i put each hole in myself ha.

@ RawSunlight: Yea i don’t really know how i managed to do that haha, somebody on a different forum mentioned that and i (kind of?) fixed it but still don’t like it enough so i posted a frontal and no side in my newest update because I’m still working on it. Thanks man, still working on it and i appreciate the crit I’ll definitely take a look at that.

Anatomy issues fixed!

Good model, but i think the clothes look too soft and confortables, especially the lower part of the pants that is very loose.
Military pants often are worn inside the boots; they can be worn outside boots as well, but they look a lot more rough and thin like in this photo; as a consequence, they have really hard and deep creases with really neat shadows.
Hope these references can help with your modeling!

Pfff like your one to talk about drapery that makes sense. Next time check yourself before making a condescending comment. Your proportions aren’t very good so far and yes your drapery needs more “love” too Maximus. If you guys are wondering why I’m so hostile check what this joke put on my post.

Dude, just because i gave you a critique doesn’t mean i was being condescending. I was attempting to be helpful. It also doesn’t mean that i am by any means an expert. Any average joe can look up and go, “those folds don’t make sense”. I haven’t perfected them myself but i can see when they are wrong. To come back with such hostilely is a sign of a lack of confidence and immaturity.

Check yourself before making yourself look like an idiot on a forum where people are trying to help one another grow as artists. It’s people like you that make me NOT want to give helpful critique that might make somebody a better artist. Why should i tell somebody what is wrong with their sculpt when i am going to get insulted for it? did i say mine was perfect? No. Did i say mine was better than yours? No. Stop being a baby and recognize that there is an issue with your work. It doesn’t mean you have to lash out at the one who is in good will trying to help you fix that problem.

I did get really bitter… but only because your critique is pretty condescending for someone who aesthetically isn’t pulling it off. What I mean to say is critiques are respected only when it’s coming from a source that knows what they’re talking about. You may think you know what proportions are, but your body of work doesn’t prove. So until then, maybe you should take it easy on the talk.

Good luck!
