Super-Sloth (WIP)

Hi,

I got time on my hands at the moment so I’ve started to model Sloth from the Goonies film. I’ve spent about 2 days on him so far.

Compared with the Superman model I was building (and I still hope it will get finished soon) I hope this one has a more realistic feel to it.

The head part I used an old default head model I created in Maya in the past. The body (T-shirt, arms and jacket) I used a combination of Zpheres and retopology.

Feel free to feed me some feedback. I’m not 100% happy with the likeness.

Thanks

dont’ have anything to say, other than it looks like a good start. Definite likeness.

Goonies! Great movie  Just picked it up on DVD for 4 bucks just a few weeks ago.

Good likeness so far!

HEEEEYYYY YOU GUUUUUUUYYYSSSS!

Haha. Sorry couldn’t resist. Looking good so far…

dangit, Brett, you beat me to it

I’m no expert but it looks pretty good to me.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Appreciated.

Here’s the rest of the model. Still mostly blocked in and needs to be worked into but this is the over all model. I’m going to tweak the pose so it’s not so symmetrical when all the detailing and modelling has been finished.

great likeness and great start so far. :+1:

Exelent work, I can’t wait for you to add the details. Looks just like him!! :+1:

yeeeeesssssssss!! Super Sloth is back!!
great start! hope you’ll finish it!

Thanks for your support, guys.

Sgrell, post more stuff!

Here’s another update. I’ve spent too much time tweaking and remodelling the arms, ripped T-shirt and adding a hat. Although I’m still not happy with the hands or triceps.

He’s looking a bit like a cheeky Cockney fella in his current pose. Hope when I get the pose less symmetrical it will put an end to his cheeky ways.

Feedback is welcome as always.

Hell Yeah! SLOTH! Baby Ruth! Ruth!

Looks pretty good so far- the gesture and proportion are right on. The knuckles of the hand still need some fine tuning- a little too even, and the bends are maybe a bit too soft in the hand. The face details could also be a little more defined- right now he looks a little soft. I think you could be more confident in your modeling strokes and make the character pop. Finally- the torn shirt looks okay… but it does have a typically zbrush model problem of looking gummy- like silly putty. It may be too much work- but it would be nice if it looked more tight and show a bit of a tear not a stretch.

your going to come live with us now Sloth… I’m going to take care of you.
man, I’m getting all misty eyed

Baa…b…y Ruuuth Ruuth! Mamma you been baad!:+1: :+1:

Skullbeast, cheers.

Comic_Craig, Thanks for the feedback. I’ve been mulling over what you’ve said. Regarding Sloth’s face… I wanted to keep it as close to the film as possible. If I worked into it more and added more detail then it may differ too much. Sometimes you can detail for the sake of it and not but I’m not sure about this model. for instance, his left eye looks a bit rough but the original looks the same.

That said, I’ll work into the hand and t-shirt some more. And work into the jacket some more to make it look more like fabric. That said, I’m still mulling over what you said about the head so it may still happen.

Hi,

To tell the truth, I haven’t spent much time on his since last. Been busy doing Xmas and NYE type stuff. All the small tweaks I’ve done and added some detail, it doesn’t look much different. Or maybe I’ve just been staring at him for too long.

Linking on to what comic_craig said earlier, a associate told me that when sculpting someone you need to add a certain amount of caricature to the model to bring it to life. Even if you have a cast of the person’s face the final sculpture will lack life and personality of said person. But I’m still pondering over how to exaggerate such a character with out over doing it.

Other than that… I’m still trying to work out what kind of base to put him on. Something that fits into the film.

Edit: Also, I’m not sure what to do with the eyebrows. The existing eyebrows don’t work very well rendered in ZB and the ones I did in Zbrush look too clunky.

C&C welcome

“HEY YOU GUYYYYYYS”! awesome.

Coming along nicely. I agree- don’t add detail for details sake. I do feel you could make the details in the face deeper and more distinct- not adding new ones, but defining what is there. Some of the details now seem to sit on top of the face- but I think they could be bolder. When I work on a female or young face- I feel less is definitely more. On a face like Sloth- I would suggest the opposite approach- subtle isn’t the goal. Also- I think there might be too much slack in the shirt to create a proper tear- the tearing action would make the shirt pull tight and there would be less of a curve in the lines. I am also unsure of the circle below the tear- have you seen this in a reference photo? It seems unreal- the action of tearing I don’t think would create that circle- unless it was there before the tear? I’ve included two images to help show what I’ve written above- one a drawing overlay, and the second an image of Hulk Hogan tearing his shirt (notice the straight lines and tension). I’m glad you aren’t completely convinced by what I’ve written- I wouldn’t take a crit as gospel- just helpful advice.

comic_craig, Thanks for the feedback. I’ll be working into the face more once I’d done the legs and shoes. I needed a little bit of a break to see it with fresh eyes. I’ve tweaked the ripped T-shirt as the image of HH shoes. I had forgotten about HH for t-shirt ripping reference. The hole in the t-shirt is nothing to do with the ripping. I thought I’d add it as much of his clothing has holes in it.

I’ve decided to give him legs so I’ve blocked them in using Z Spheres and will hopefully re-topologies them soon. Also, I’ve added a breakdown of the Subtools. I connected the arms at the back so I can always use the Smart ReSym if need be.

Thanks
