Subsurface Scattering Problems

I haven’t used ZBrush’s renderer much in the past, but now, I really want to try an sss render. Can’t seem to get the right settings, though.
I looked at what information I could find on Pixologic’s site, but no matter what settings I try, I get either no noticable subsurface scattering, or a blackened image. What am I missing here? Any suggestions, hints, or info on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

Julian_K has put together this thread http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?t=92983

Drops alot of science on the subject, playing around with SSS while keeping that thread open for pointers helped me sort it out.

Thanks, Extra Dimensional. Helpful, but I’m still missing something here.

Loading up the SSS Zprojects and seeing how everything is put together is a good start. Those are ready for BPR as soon as they’re loaded.

Once you have that material loaded up, and the lights active from the Zproject, you can assign it to any of your own models.

Basic things to look out for are:

Lights: Make sure at least one light in your scene has SSS button active. It can even be a light that is turned off.

Material: Make sure you have an SSS Shader in one of the shader slots. S1, S2, S3 or S4. If you don’t have one, but want to put one in a material, open a material that has at least two shader channels. Then you can open an SSS material, and CopySH from the SSS channel, then PasteSH into the channel of your material.

SSS colors: The 4 swatches in the SSS shader channel display the colors of the SSS effect. The outer and inner are the most noticeable when you adjust them. More info on that in the thread above.

BPR: You want to have BPR set to render SSS effects by clicking it active in the Render menu. Then you can adjust the settings via tweaking them with the guide images in the thread.

Should get results this way, again starting with the Zprojects that are set for SSS is a good way to get your feet wet.

*edit: The SSS projects can be browsed to via Lightbox under the Projects tab. there’s a basic sphere, the soldier, the rhino and maybe some others to get you started.

Thanks very much for the tips! I’ll check it out.
