Subdivisions at start of sculpt 2018

Got a question. Most guides / tutorials say that you should start at the lowest possible resolution and then gradually build up from there. Now with Sculptris Pro in Zbrush 2018 and brush size effecting resolution, is this still the best way to work? Do you just leave sculptris Pro off until the final stages of the model?

Thanks

Well, you could still go crazy with polys from the very beginning, then just duplicate, zremesh and project.
Sculptris 2018 is useful because it replaces Dynamesh in most cases, like when you start from a sphere and go for a full body character.

If you start from a base low poly model made, for instance, in Maya, then yep, better you first subdivide and then, once at the highest level (which will be lower, since the resolution is now dynamic) you start using Sculptris.

It’s not really about High Resolution vs Low Resolution. It’s about ease of use. Working at a lower subdivision level means that it’s easier to manipulate large areas without creating weird lumps on your surfaces. Working low to high is really just a tool to help you in sculpting, but it’s not a requirement by any means.

I think it all depends on what yours goals are with the sculpt. The benefit to subdivision and working with lower resolutions is that you can focus on defining the main forms before ever worrying about surface details, and you can create these large shapes without accidentally creating lumpier surfaces. Later on once you do have some finer details sculpted in at higher sub-d levels you can always step down and make large changes to the model without destroying them, and vice versa (smoothing away small surface details without destroying the shape).

Personally I see Sculptris Pro as more of a conceptual tool, something that will let you very quickly doodle out 3d ideas and experiment without being locked down to anything. Depending on the goal of the sculpt then what you make with this method might be sufficient for your needs. Otherwise I think if you use it to make something you like and really want to take it further, it can still be beneficial to then ZRemesh/Retopologize it at a low resolution and begin using subdivision levels to really refine it.
