Subdividing not showing level numbers like 2, 3, 4,....

I imported a character OBJ from iClone, sculpted it, and I think I clicked higher resolution even though I hadn’t divided the model yet…whatever I did, if I click the divide button, the polygons divide but the level numbers do not show up. Plus, the model divides in a weird, non-smooth way.

Right now the model is undo-ed back to it’s original division level. How can I get it to divide normally so I can see the level numbers and subsequent divides don’t take away smoothness?

*EDIT Okay, I see that I have to “apply” dynamic subdivision. Don’t recall Zbrush having this.

EDIT ADDITIONAL Also, had some aspect of the model HIDDEN when dividing, I think, was the primary issue.

Follow up… I’m at level 3 subD with 200,000 polys and press divide to get to level 4, then get the following message:

“A 3D mesh with a subdivision history may be partially modified only when the lowest subdivision level is active.
Switch to the lowest subdivision level or delete/freeze the subdivision history and try again…”

Haven’t used zBrush in a while, used to just press divide to get a 4th level. Why should I switch to a lower subD level to divide or delete/freeze anything? I just want to get to level 4 subdivision.

EDIT* I keep figuring out things by myself…I had a mask on.

What you described is the way it is supposed to work. For instance, Dynamic Subdivision has to be applied to the mesh for it to work, and turned off when not needed.

Thanks, Dillster.

and over 3 years later you saved me from a headache.

Thank you.
