styling fibermesh

Hi. I know this is a really dumb newbie question, but here goes: how do I style long fibermesh hair? Every time I think I’ve got it to lay flat against my model, I turn it round and it is sticking out at 90 degrees. I’ve created polygroups using masking, and I’m working on individual sections. I’ve lowered front collision tolerance and most of the other parameters, including stiffness in the fibermesh menu of brushes. I almost get it smooth and then suddenly it seems one storke with cause it to turn into a rats nest. I guess the thing I’m struggling with is the effect the brushes have on the direction the fibers takes. Is there a secret to this? The brushes seem to pull the fibers up as it straightens them out. Do I need to have the fibers posed at a particular angle to get the hair to lay flat against the head? I see so many beautiful models here with the most amazing hair, and I just wonder how these amazing artists get it to do what they want. Thank you for your help.
