Studding Anatomy

I’ve noticed that for creating amazing characters i need to know some anatomy.Do i really need to know anatomy to modeling a chaarcters, like people, animals… I really don’t want to learn anatomy because i know that i will lose time when i understand something from it. What is the best book/DVD for a beginner?

Is there something else i can do about modeling that is it away from anatomy:D?

Yes and No. There have been plenty of great works that are completely devoid of any realistic anatomy, however I think that’s more the exception rather than the rule. Knowing the proper anatomy will make sculpting any sort of realistic person or animal much much easier, and more convincing. At the end of the day, don’t be lazy! There’s no real reason not to learn it, it’ll just be more knowledge even if you don’t end up using it ever (you will).

polaroid29 is right but It is primarily volume and proportion the rest just falls in and is believable as long as the silhouette is recognizable.

I teach anatomy in a Ceramic school and I’ve come to interest myself with this aspect because I was kind of frustrated when I was only refering to anatomy books.
I’ve learned a lot from Philippe faraut videos and books and I think the serie of videos the structure of man is a good way to know how to construct your humanoid creation.

Take a look at my site, in the links (liens, it’s a french site by a french guy) page there’s a lot ideas.

I definitely agree that once you know the proportions and understand volumes and planes, you’re good to go.

Okay then I have decide to give e try to learn something about anatomy. What exactly to i need to learn about anatomy of human or creature? Shape of the body, proportion? Would like to recommend me some good books, DVD where i can learn in detail for this?

What is better, to learn anatomy first before to start modeling organic stuff, or first to know some 3d porgram like maya and zbrush and then learn anatomy?

I think learning anatomy is important for any aspiring 3d artist interested in doing characters. It’s just as important for an environment modeler to study different architecture. Knowledge is power!

I’ve become bored doing environments and lately I’ve started doing more character work. I’ve been digging into anatomy books and studying the human form to become more familiar with sculpting the body.

Understanding our own make-up will not only make you a better artist but also faster in your workflow. You don’t need to have med-school knowledge but every bit of experience helps take you to the next level.

Level up!
