Stroke palette Modifiers subpalette grayed out, can't access Spacing and Placement

I’m trying to apply wrinkle alphas to the surface in a directional manner, so I need to use Dots or Freehand stroke. But I need to increase the spacing so the alphas don’t just all pile up together, but all the options except for Roll are grayed out. Why can’t I adjust the spacing?

Not sure why they are no longer enable to use.

Have you tryed to use Lazy mouse and play with the LazyStep slider?

^ Yes I was just trying that out and I think LazyStep is the solution in this case. Thanks!
