Strange behaviour when using the move brush with the image plane for reference.

Strange behaviour when using the move brush with the image plane.jpg Hi all,
I have a new problem with ZB 2018 and am still very much a newbie; so it doesn’t take much to see me stuck! I also have a workaround for this problem (sort off) but I’m wondering wtf is going on.
I tested the issue and it is definitely NOT happening in ZB 4 R8…
I’m using an image plane for a reference image to get the basic proportions before going off on my own ideas.
When I started pulling out parts of my sphere to get the general shape, every pull/move by the move brush left behind rather large rectangles (the size of the brush diameter) that basically went through to the background, past the image plane!
Just to test things out, I loaded up an older WIP of an Acrocathasaurus and I got the same behaviour! So I thought I’d try using the snakehook instead and it worked normally; only leaving small areas where the mesh had been moved (ie. not great big rectangles).
However, sometimes I still get the big rectangles when using the snakehook brush; so the “workaround” is a bit lame…

Does anyone have any ideas as to what is going on here?

Obviously, Sculptris Pro isn’t running (move brush on default settings so Sculptris Pro can’t run) and there was no difference with Dynamesh on or off…
I’ve attached a screencap to show what’s happening [which appears to have migrated up to the top somehow]…

Erwin

NOTE: moderators; I posted this on the ZB 2018 thread also yesterday but as the previous post before mine had had no traffic for two weeks (which I noticed today), which is why I decided to create a new post as this issue is currently stopping me from continuing with my ZB learning.
If this is not allowed; I apologise and am quite happy for you to remove the post from the ZB 2018 troubleshooting thread.
Thank you and I hope you understand…

Strange behaviour when using the move brush with the image plane.jpg

Do the big squares appear when you render? I wonder if it might just be a graphics bug that appears pre-render.

Yeah, it’s pre-render; I’ve barely started sculpting.
It’s basically during the time when I’m using an image plane for reference; as in making the model semi-opaque and using the move brush to get the general shape.
I can do it with the squares appearing but it’s a royal pain in the arse.
I don’t think it’s a graphics card issue as there is no problem when using 4 R8; but I want to use Sculptris Pro with my new sculpt.
I’m only showing an older WIP of a dinosaur as the issue was much easier to see - I’ve barely shaped my new sculpt into anything recognisable and sculpting dinos clearly needs reference if you’re going for scientific accuracy…
Strangely, when using the snakehook brush, the problem is intermittent. I’m wondering whether it’s a bug…
Thanks for replying, btw.
Any other ideas?

Info update.
I discovered that it does have something to do with Sculptris Pro!
It always happens with the move brush (which makes it all the more confusing as it doesn’t work with Sculptris Pro) but when using the snakehook brush; it does it when Sculptris Pro is on but not when it’s off…

I’d like to thank members for their help/suggestions, but as only Bonnie 2001 bothered to respond (thank YOU, Bonnie 2001), there really is no-one else to thank…

I have the same Issue. And i think I found a solution. In the preferences under Performance, I turned the Draw Hidden Polygons all the way up to 50.

Hope that works for you too.

cheers

Hey, I just dug out the same file I was using to illustrate the issue 3 years ago and still no difference, I’m afraid.
You’d think with the speed in which Pixologic fixed the gizmo icon size ‘feature’ in ZB 2022, this wouldn’t still be an issue.
I still have a copy of ZB 4R8 installed just so I can avoid this issue, it pisses me off that much (I lose all concentration/enjoyment in what I am working on).
Such is life…
Thanks for offering a potential solution; I’m sure I’m not the only one annoyed by this issue but it’s the squeaky wheel that gets the grease… :slightly_smiling_face:
