Storing mask in layer to use on a different layer/layers?

Is it possible to store a mask on a layer and then create a new layer and use the mask stored in the previous layer?
Possible steps to get it the method working:
-create new layer
-mask area
-turn off record or create new layer
-mask disappears

Seems like a mask only stores and shows its visibility when the layer is recording.
I have tried create polygroups to keep my selections but those polygroups eventually break and do not hold the original polygroup shape. This happens when I go up and down in subdibvisions.

Any ideas?

I’d say your best bet is a quick unwrap and storing your mask as a texture. Just remember not to break your UVs at some point.

Would love to see something to handle storing masks(without saving/exporting)
Basic Boolean type actions to combine/subtract masks also.
