Steam Mech

Final for Zbrush class here, requisite hard edged object, later to be combined with scene and organic model. I opted to go all out with the hard edged part and went ahead with a steam driven mech that I have had on the drawing board for a while now. Again, I really wish I had my soon-to-be-an-actuality computer upgrade before taking this class, because this shot the crap out of my system and must have crashed a good 15 times over the course of working on it in zbrush.

I really like the details, it really has a great jury-rigged, turn of the century look with the aluminum material. Unfortunately, while the texture is good, it sort of has a modern army feel to it, which I think detracts from its overall impact. You might want to consider doing something as simple as editing the hue/saturation of the texture in photoshop to give it a more old fashioned touch. Of course, if you were going for a more modern feel, this may not be necessary.

Yeah it’s interesting that you bring that up, because that was exactly what I was thinking about as I worked on it. Originally I wanted to it be largely copper in color as seen by the pre-painting versions. But I don’t know how to work in that copper matcap while still having painted parts with a matte finish.

As for the background of the mech itself, it uses old fashion style steam technology, but as the design became easier to produce, it could be employed like wwI armor, in fact it developed instead of traditional wheeled and tracked armor. Given that, some level of cross-era design elements was intended.

Wow Tristan, that’s amazing. I love the textures on this and the overall design. I can’t wait to see yours finished =D

Ha, that’s funny, you used the Volcom logo like it’s some kind of imperial fleet insignia or something

Haha yes, it does look like the volcom logo, but it isn’t the same thing. Ironically I wasn’t even aware of the volcom logo when I started using this insignia.

Hey Tris!

Great job on the mech  It really looks excellent. I like that you didn’t go overboard with alpha detailing.

The colors and insignia’s are awesome as well  You should animate it over break!
