Starcraft II Reaper

Hey guys! Thank you for taking the interest and time to view my work.

This is my first post on ZBCentral, and I’ve to say I am extremely excited!

This project is my personal take on the Reaper unit from the upcoming Starcraft II. I was hugely inspired by Fausto DeMartini’s Marine model (from the cinematic), as well as the concept and lore department over at Blizzard (Samwise Didier in particular). Once I saw the art and the in-game footage of the Reaper unit, I decided in 2 seconds that I wanted to make one.

I wanted to put my own touch into the project, instead of just copying Sam’s work, so i started off with rough sketches of the armor design, trying to figure out how I could make it look similar, yet different. While figuring that out, I decided it would make sense to make the Reaper a different nationality, thus explaining the variation in the armor design. If you can’t tell, that’s the geek in me talking

After the basic concepts were done, I went on to make the model in Max, starting from the feet - up. As the time went on working on the model, I’ve started researching tips and tricks of ZBrush, planning ahead as to what I could do and improve, once the base mesh is complete. The tutorials in ZClassroom were a Huge help, as I haven’t really used ZBrush prior to this project. Once the model was complete, I rigged it in Max and posed it, before bringing it into ZBrush, where I proceeded to add some details, like improving the folds on the suit. When I was happy with what I had, I set on my final perspective for the composition and dropped it to canvas, followed by adding battle damage to metal parts of the armor and surface texture to cloth & leather parts, using the alpha brushes. When I was finished with all the tiny details, I’ve exported different matcap renders and started compositing them in photoshop, adding more detail, scratches, and worn effects to the Reaper. The last step was actually going back to Max and using the Afterburn plugin to create the flames for the jet packs.

I’ve also made a variation of the final render for the more die hard Starcraft fans, which you can check out here.

And I’ve included some wip images as well

Cool! I really like all the detail you put into this piece. I’m looking forward to seeing some more of your work.

Man that’s an awesome work!!! I love the armor design, it would be a great halloween costume :stuck_out_tongue:

I really like this. looks a little top heavy, but I like it.

WTF man, is terrans is Soviet now?

Thanks guys!

Frenzy - Terrans are Humans, so could be from all nations and walks of life  Do you remember how the Battlecruiser voice-over sounded? That guy was definitely from Eastern Europe (although voiced by Chris Metzen).

Yeah, he talked about that in his original post. :stuck_out_tongue:

This is a fantastic piece! I think the only thing holding it back would be your cloth folds. They are not the same quality as your fantastic armor sculpting. Great Render too!

this is Z BRUSH central btw not 3D Studio Max central. You have done good modelling in max be really scimmed the surface (literally) with zbrush. Personally I hate the design but thats not down to you.

So after that cutting response I am sure you hate me but let me just say I am impressed by your 3d skills.

Scott: You’re right, I have not done extensive sculpting on this piece, however, it would not look nearly as good without the help of ZBrush. All the surface details aside, the final look, color and lighting are all the product of ZBrush. I’ve spent a huge amount of time playing with different matcaps, making my own, and compositing the renders in photoshop, so I felt it was very appropriate for the forum, as I have nothing but praise for the software.
I’ve tried following Vitaly Bulgarov’s render workflow that he’s done with his awesome Angel project, so I’m a bit puzzled why you didn’t have the same criticism for him -

Never the less, no, I do not hate you or anything of the sort. I take and consider all criticism, and I thank you for taking the time to check out my work as well.

Cheers

looks more liek read alert game ;D
