Star Wars: The Rancor

Hello,

I started this one a while back in June/July- when CGSociety ran a Hardcore Modelling Challenge based on a memorable scene from the Star Wars universe.

Please note I didn’t use alphas on this sculpt or even half the tool sin ZBrush 3 (Gravity etc) - every wrinkle was pain-stakingly painted freehand. I did a re-topo of the entire mesh to help with rigging around the mouth and I must say, the Z-Project brush was both incredibly useful (thanks to Sebastien LeGrain for his fine tutorial) and quite difficult to use in tight areas (the eyes and spikes on the back were not fun to re-project ;))

Feedback and critisism most welcome!

wow very neat indeed. Keep updating. I’ve seen some of these being textured and rendered photorreal!

Wow! Amazing! Can’t wait to see more. Btw, what is the current polycount?

amazing work !! great i love Rancor

Cool stuff

Looks cool! Nice details.

Very nice, sculpt!

great work, you have really done a superb job with the Rancor

Do you plan on texturing this beast?

My only crit is I think the claws could be a little longer and should hook a little at the end. They look to have a simular shape as a Rhino horn.

Every so often this fella gets re-interpreted on this forum, this looks tp be a pretty good attempt as well. I think he still needs a little more weight added on to balance him out.

Very cool! Also I hope that I didn’t forget my defensive bone…

Thanks for your kind words everyone.

DDS, Steve-T, Marsyas, Derek Frenzo, piz: Thanks

He’s currently at 4687494 polygons and a few more for the teeth and spikes on his shoulder.

Big fan of your work. Thanks for stopping by!

Okay, taken your suggestions on and you can see I’ve curved the claws and made them a bit more like rose bush thorns. And yes, I’ll definitely be texturing him as I’ve recently worked out how to use the PolyPaint tool

Jason Belec:

Hehe… Well, I saw the competition over at CGSociety and noticed everyone else were making fairly quiet scenes but SW was more about action to me. And surely, the Rancor was top of most people’s lists as the biggest and most menacing but you saw so little of him. Naturally, this made it hard to find decent reference.

I’ve transposed him quickly (I really think I left it too late to use transpose as all the detail is being warped pretty badly), just to see if I do need to bulk him out more. What do you think? Does he look fatter now he’s hunched over?

Okay, the tranposed pose and some hand detail…

Cheers!

Very cool Update! :+1:

More tummy to help balance him, and the crouch should be lower so the tail appendage can also help balance him. Widen his stance so the feet and tail are more like a functioning tripod, allowing something his size and dimensions to have mobility. All creatures have certain attributes that are required for daily function. The Rancor is not a walker as a man would be, more like a Gorilla, albeit a really nasty one.

Nice work though. As for the issue with transposing, are you doing it on lower levels or trying to do it all at the top level? (later is a bad idea)
