Star Trek - Vulcan base

Hi,

this is my latest work. It’s a Vulcan base built into an asteroid. It will be part of the upcoming Star Trek fan movie “Star Trek ENTERPRISE II : The beginning of the end” (2012) by Jürgen Kaiser which is a stop-motion movie with CGI elements.

The station was modeled in 3DS Max with a few surface editings in Zbrush. The asteroid’s rock surfaces were done in Zbrush. I made alot of use of Zspheres for the rocks jutting out.

I used clay brush all the time to get a rocky appearance and some alpha brushes to achieve the typical structures and cracks.
Materials and rendering were done in 3DS Max using Vray, textures and post-production in Photoshop.

Very nice and detailed, the size of the thing is impressive (or should I say illusion of)

So here are some out-of-Zbrush screenshots showing how the rocks were made.

And this is the final low-poly version with normalmaps and ambient occlusion maps which I used for the materials.

Very nice, I really like what you got going on in this scene. Would you like to
show us how you went about making stone like that?

That’s some far out stuff. Definately the kind of detail that when textured, lit properly, and rendered looks REAL.

And a close-up of the rock. The tiny lamps/windows are simple square polygons with light materials.

That looks very cool

Thanks for sharing your rock technique! The rock formation in this scene is fantastic.

Wow, thanks heaps for that! Thank you for taking the time to show us.
