SSS Render in 4R7

It’s been a while since I rendered an image using SSS in Zbrush and now it does not seem to be working (at least as I remember). I am using 4R7 P3, and the options I once used for editing the material appear to have been moved or eliminated. Under Material/Modifier I used to edit slots for innner and outer ambient and blend colors. Now I can only find slots for Diffuse, Spec, Ambient and Cavity. (at the bottom of the menu, just above Channel Descriptors)

I know those slots change based on the nature of the material. I can’t seem to find one that has the old slots. Is there a new way to create SSS in renders now?

Thanks

Hey Sharon, it still works the same as before.

You can copy (CopySH) the SSS values from the FresnelOverlay material to whatever material you wanted it for provided it has enough shader slots.

DoubleShaders(2 slots) TriShaders(3 slots) and QuadShaders(4 slots) are a good place to start.

Thanks for the suggestion.

  • I don’t handily see a Fresnel Overlay material in the default material source group.
  • I did find a “Zskin_01” material used in Lightbox/Project/Demo Projects/ “SSS_Startup”. This is a tri-shader material that contains my coveted slots for blend and additive colors in the second shader.
  • Is there a way to take a material, say like the Basic Material (Grey) and manually build/add in the Fresnel factor? – Or do you have to start with a material that uses it in one of its shaders?

It was a bit of a pain to search for the SSS_Startup project. I now recall, I found it through serendipity years ago and that is what I used for my renders back when. Seems like there should be a better way, but I just don’t see it documented anywhere.

Many thanks, again

Please scratch part of that earlier post… I did find the Fresnel Overlay Material after I restarted ZBrush. Sorry…

An amazing guy here on ZBC, Pablander, has posted a wealth of information which I think would benefit you a lot in learning about materials.

There is an in depth section in there all about SSS setup.

The Ebook in question is called ‘Zbrush Skin Material & Single Pass BPR’ .pdf

There’s a ton of very useful tutorials on his site after you get through that one, definitely worth checking out :+1:

Thanks So Much!

Zbrush is like this amazing enigma, the more I learn about it, the more I realize how little I know. I am downloading the ebook as I type this note!
