Splintered mesh

22
Hi,
I was trying to sculpt the mouth of a face. After using dynamesh and different brushes like inflate, clay, pinch a.s.o. my mesh becomes strange (as you can see on the screenshot). Is there a way of unraveling it?

Also while inflating inward there where some segments going outward.

Thanks for your help.

Hello @Mirko!

This is a result of the mesh’s topology becoming stretched or distorted. If you switch on polyframe mode (shift + f) you can see where the polygons have been pulled into extreme shapes. Under normal circumstances, this tends to happen to areas that have undergone heavy brushwork.

  • One of the functions of Dynamesh is to rapidly re-mesh an object as you work, which redistributes the geometry and “relaxes” areas that have become overly stretched. So just Dynamesh periodically or after major changes to keep your polygons from becoming distorted.

  • You could also enable Sculptris Pro mode for the brushes that support it. This mode actually dynamically adds and subtracts geometry as you work, which will prevent this kind of distortion.

Polygons inflate along their normals. There may have been some areas where the polygons had become twisted around with their normals facing the opposite direction.

Thanks Spyndel!
Is there a way to solve the twisting polygons? Or will dynamesh also take care of it?

Dynamesh would solve that issue as well. Otherwise, some light passes with a smooth brush will usually relax them back into shape as well, but you may lose a bit of detail doing that.

Ok thanks a lot !

I also would like to know how to create an opening between the upper and lower lip? Because I started with a sphere where all segments are connect.
I know there is a slice brush as I saw in a tutorial it needs two steps until the mesh is completely cut. What i do miss is some kind of scissors tool.

I will open another thread since this is another topic
