Smoothing Question - Smoothing to Weak

Hey Guys,

I have a question about the smooth tool. It seems that at times the smooth tool gets really weak (un-cool) at higher sub-d levels even if I crank z-intensity to 100. I can usually fix the problem if I jump down to level 1 then back up again. But at higher mesh resolutions this is becoming time consuming. Do you all run into this one? Is there a way around it? Am I doing something lame?

Thanks!

Adam

Oh, and I did try this but it didn’t seem to work:

There are two ways to smooth your models:

  1. Turn off Quick. As long as it’s active, the smoothing routines can’t take effect. For polymesh objects, you must also increase the Tool>Display Properties>DSmooth slider.

  2. Divide the mesh to increase the number of polygons. This will smooth it at the same time.

Something else to keep in mind is that there’s a Smoothing Curve found in the Transform palette. You can use this to increase the strength of the smoothing brush.

thank you!

When I use the hotkey for smooth (shift) it doesn’t seem to work well. But added the tool to my floating palette as well as the intensity slider and it worked better and more predictable…weird.

Man, thought I fixed it but no go. Strange. Is it just harder to smooth at higher resolutions?

Don’t forget also that there is a Smooth option in Tool/Deformation/Smooth.
You can mask off the areas that you do not want to smooth,or just smooth the whole object at the same time.Works great for me on those Hi-Res models that
require smoothing.
Hope this helps.

Also, hiding parts of the model will speed up the smoothing calculations, effectively making the smoothing seem stronger.

I had the same problem… just what i needed to know, thanks guys  :+1:

This is still to weak. I really need to know how to do this…
Bartender, i need a stronger one

aurick, i see this as a bug :frowning:
because in lower subD’s i use smooth a LOT and… at higher division levels it’s just too LOW and i need something efficient…

Sounds like you are getting to far ahead of yourself…
It’s easier to Move 100,000 Poly’s than 4,000,000…
Take your time with the Lower Sub-Division Levels, so you don’t have so many bad areas to smooth…

It’s not about that, it’s about my workflow:
i keep the intensity on the draw tool a little higher … and then i smooth…
i do everything right in the lower levels, i’m not rushing anything.
