greetings! somehow my smoothing brush has turned into an evil poly destroying putz. (see attached) if you recognize what button i may have clicked by accident please let me know. thanks in advance for all your help.
What brush appears in the Current Brush thumbnail when you hold Shift? I expect you’ve accidentally changed it from Smooth. All you need to do is hold Shift and pick the Smooth brush you want from the Brush palette.
thank you, excellent suggestion however no joy on a resolution. (see attached) got any other ideas? thanks again.

Use Zadd and not Zsub. That should fix it. Switch to Zadd while holding down Shift.
you’re right, it doesn’t do that anymore. but it also doesn’t do anything. i have never used smoothing on z-add because it makes no (or not much) change in the mesh. hummm… am i wrong?
The more subdivision levels you have, the less noticeable smoothing is on the highest subdivision level. If you have a lot of smoothing to do, switch to a lower subdivision level then work your way up through each level. Also make sure your Z Intensity is at 100.
okay, that was an issue. i decreased the subD level and was able to get some decent smoothing out of it. thank you, i can begin to move forward again. but the poly corruption on z-sub smoothing… did i just not notice that before? is it always to be used on z-add? thanks.
Yes, you should always use Zadd for smoothing.
Also, read about “Smooth Brush Modes” here (further down on the page) if you need more strength in the smooth brush.
one day i will have learned this program. thanks tons.
No problem!
