Smart ReSym won't correct center line vertices

When I use Smart ReSym, it doesn’t correct the center line of vertices:

However, it reports that full symmetry was found, and it does correct all other vertices.

I have tried the following:

  • Smart ReSym at each subdivision level, starting at the lowest and working up (no change in results)
  • ReSym (does not correct symmetry and reports incomplete success)
  • Mirror and Weld (makes center line symmetrical, but usually modifies topology, which is unacceptable)

I saw someone recommend masking the good side before using it, try that yet?

Yeah, that preserves the masked side, but it doesn’t affect the center in any way. If the center is masked, it is of course unaffected, and if it is unmasked the original problem is still present. Thanks for the suggestion though!

That is probably the only thing that Smart ReSym cannot fix. The easiest solution would be to export subdivision level 1 to an application that lets you manually edit vertices. Fix those points there, then import it back into level 1 of your ZBrush model.

It doesn’t look like there’d be too many points to shift slightly with a small draw size if you’re on a lower level than this one. Masking and or with disabling axis you don’t want to move helps.

Thanks for the responses! It does help to know that I’m not missing anything.

One final related question:

While sculpting with symmetry, I am having trouble accessing the inside of the leg:

So I turn off symmetry and hide one of the legs:

Then I must use Smart Resym to update the hidden leg.

I want to keep symmetry enabled while only one half of the mesh is visible. Is this possible in ZBrush? I know that it is possible in other 3D applications.

The Standard brush with Sub will push in vertex normals. Probably not the brush you wanted to use…?

It’s tricky and it might not be what you’re looking for but you could try turning on the Topological masking on your brush. Select your brush and go into the Brush Menu Brush>Auto Masking and at the bottom there should be a Topological button with a range and smooth slider. This option is the difference between the Move brush and the Move Topological brush. This will let you sculpt one side without the brush affecting the other close proximity parts but still maintain changes via symmetry.

However my recommendation is to smart resym after making changes while hidden. You can mask off the rest of the model to make it run the calculation quicker in just the leg area you make changes to.

Ideally it’s best to do all your symmetrical work before doing variations on each side of a model. Then you can just easily mirror and wield. However this is not always possible as a lot of projects will have changes during the entire creation process.

Thanks for all the tips, a lot of helpful detail there. I’ve used Topological masking and will definitely try it out for this problem. Beyond that, I guess I will just sculpt one side alone like you said, and make sure to hide the center line so I can ReSym or mirror without any problems.
