Skin material and Light

I finished this image , and decided to move on to new one.As I said in the last post . I was trying to find the best way to create human skin tone in Zbrush .I saw some examples in the forum and I could not find something I really like. I attached zip file and part of the texture so you can try what I did if you want to.I wanted material which won’t make so much difference after rendered. Because I had hard time to figure out what will happen after render when I was painting the color on the texture map. And lost patience by multiple crush. By this material setting and lighting setting , I wanted to do some sheen and red grow in the shadow area to imitate skin tone. Still need improvement . If someone has better idea , please share your way by posting your final image or just sphere and skin material and light setting. May be image of the model in fast shader too.Since thetexture will affect the color a lot . Or simply post the link to your post . We discussed about criticism on the last post , so no more about it on this post please .
I just want to talk about how you make skin tone. I also welcome something like Neville’s Alien.
Looking forward to seeing something cool . Any question welcome.

Excellent job.

How was the hair done. Is it modeled and painted or just painted post production?

Portart,
Looks Great to me. I think the skin tone perfecto. Great job
and what about that hair. Is that ZBhair?
Thx for the Share.
HanKO.

You did Abe justice to say the least. You could probably sell this image for $$$ somewhere I am sure. I have saved it to my files to show off to my friends this week if I can get over this flu…grrrrr…Super realistic…no critiques from me only words of praise. Thnx for the generous posting of the files, I am sure they will prove invaluable. Looking forward to more of your works.
kind regards,
Ron

ps. I too am looking forward to hopefully hearing how you created the hair for this image. Outstanding job.:+1: x 100

Absolute amazing!!! :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1:

It’s like painting heavily tinted silicone, if the base color is good, it paints up great! Thanks
p.s Great touch with the ruddy red light!!

hi Portart,

As you have learned, lights can greatly affect material. Sometimes the difference between preview and best can definitely be a “what the …?” experience. I would like to point you to a few threads that helped me out with some tips, tools etc.

This might come in pieces because my isp seems to be having brain farts at the moment and can’t seem to stay connected long.

the first with some intriguing info is this thread. Jantim gives us some great clues as to the workings of materials with a texture in this thread. this will be of great use to you if you painted the hair in PS on another layer because you can experiment with merging skin tones/renderpasses in z with various versions of the same material.

Of course no playing with materials could be complete without Svengali’s super duper cool plugin/zscript…Zmats!!! The link for which is in my signature below.

Of course this thread with a link to Antropus’s great tutorialalso gives some great clues to that awe inspiring never reaching goal of perfect skin.

Next would be this threadthen this one with cameyo’s filters script.

Also reading other of Jantim’s threads with materials are good cuz as he learns the workings he shares those tips he learns along the way…all great info on combining the every elusive combo of material/texture combo.

also…tried to do a search on one of my fav light setups but the name will not come up on a search…I think though it was one of the ones posted in SOK’s thread found here. In any event this thread provides some good learning material.

Also there is a link somewhere to the 1.55b manual which explains some of the materials attributes…z2 has a few more which of course we don’t have a manual for. Any way its worth a look to see how the diffuse curves work…well how any of the curves work.

and speaking of curves…(will add the link when I find it)

anyway, explore the highlighter, shadows, depth and saturation brushes…the last is one of my favorites. Remember that they have their own modifiers too for interesting effects…choose one then check out the modifier in the tool menu/palette.

Just wonderful.

I really love the eyes.

Nice work:+1:

Dogbone, MrZankO ,Hair is done in Photoshop after I render everything.
Last night I was trying Deco Brush like Antropus showed in his great tutorial. I found it is good. I like it that the hair get tapered end.Brush in photoshop does same kind of effect too. Ron Harris, Thanks ,I hope you get better soon. I hope I can make somethig out of this portrait .Thanks S/_ayer, and Patton ,If you find a way to make it look like lightly tinted silicone look, please let us know . Aminuts , Thanks always , that is great help for everyone. Actually I missed a lot of posts before. I guess good thing won’t come that easy. Hoping in the future , there will be simple solution for great skin tone. I will go through those links. Thanks Frenchy and fizzy, I love the old man you made, looking forward to seeing next one . Thanks Meats Meier, I should have seen your DVD before I started this ,Great help. I hope I can work with this software like you do soon.

The beauty of zbrush…is it allows us all the freedom to find our own solutions. I cherish it for that. So far everyone takes in what they learn and or finds their own way of doing things. There is no cut and dry, do this or do that way. It’s what keeps the creativity flowing and works original. If it was easy then all works would look too similar.

That said…yeah it would be nice to have some more info on things like materials, and layers, lighting etc all packaged up nice and neat so when starting out or even a few models later you can refer to it for some ideas on how to go about it or add to your creativeness in finding solutions that work for you or your tastes…whatever.

Anyways love this version of Lincoln, hope to see more from ya soon, and hope ya find something there that pops the idea bulb wide open for ya.

Looks great…the eyes are especially well done.:+1:

That is such incredible work I have trouble trying to find the words to describe it. I can not.
I’ve obviously never seen old Abe in person, but I stare at it, and that looks like he is doing a sitting for me.
I’ve seen antropous’s work many times, but I’ve never seen it applied to someone real (dead but real) that I can identify. I’m astonished, and amazed. It’s incredible. :+1:

Outstanding work.
I’ve attached an image in which I’ve used Photoshop curves to bleed some of the red out of the midrange tones, and I’ve added some blue to the highlights.
This is just a cheap attempt to simulate translucency (slightly more red around the shadows) and the reflective qualities of skin (the specular reflections in skin shouldn’t have any tint, generally only metals have tinted reflections).
I think this shows off your work a bit more, shouldn’t be too hard to achieve the same kind of effect directly in ZBrush.gp2.jpg

AMAZING :grimacing: :+1:

Yes aminuts , I agree. That is why we all unique and different artist. Thank you very much PixelRod,wierdPal and Dremmer. Thank you Greg for spending your time to make it better . Actually the warmness of the color was bugging me for a while. There was an intension to make it warm and more red since I saw my posted image in different computer and they looked paler. So I tried to puch up the red, but it was too much. I think your version look great too, to me a bit too yellow and shiny. Now I cut down red a bit , so I think it look better .

Wow. Love it. One of the best portraits that I’ve seen done in ZBrush.

This is fantastic art. Incredible detail. Good work.:+1: :+1:

Amazing work! Congrats!
